Not sure why you're quibbling over the definition of pop culture (though I'd say both Cronenberg and Eno belong in it, widely defined). The main point is that Bubbles knows something about the wide world outside the battlebot warehouse. She must have at least read about these two auteurs, and more likely have seen/listened to their work. She's not always cocooning at home forbidding herself to grin.

Well, Marty, you're not so much old as scarred. You've been around life long enough to know that a spontaneous party almost invariably goes wrong, usually in a dramatic way. That's before you factor in Marten's experience of what tends to happen when Faye gets spontaneous. I also suspect that Marten is right - a lot of their friends have lives these days! So, yeah, it isn't so much the years as it is the mileage!

I love how Faye assumes that she's badgered Bubbles into compliance. That is another thing that could go horribly wrong in this scenario!

I'm sticking with my idea that she'll try to be curmudgeon but will find herself actually enjoying the event. Emily will weird her out because she's Emily and she may find that Pintsize, Winslow and Momo surprise her; I've got the feeling that she's no more 'into' associating with AIs than she is with humans.

I believe so; Faye has insisted that she doesn't want Marten to abstain just because of her but being around all those people who are drinking? That's a test that I don't think she's even hypothetically considered yet.

A Prediction:
Faye will be about to sneak a drink when Bubbles, to whom she has 'come out' as someone fighting alcoholism, suddenly appears next to her and grabs her wrist in a vice-like grip. "You don't want to do that."

Faye responds with a rant about how she can have 'one damn drink' without falling off the wagon and how at least this solves the mystery of whether Bubbles wants to be a friend. Bubbles' response is something like this: "I have limited experience with friendship, but I would imagine that a true friend would prevent you from carrying out a self-destructive behaviour path, irrespective of your own immediate feelings on the matter." That's when Faye breaks down and realises that Bubbles is her friend.

Marten has always shown himself inclined to drink at parties.  It seems likely he's decided not to drink in front of Faye no matter how much she insists she's cool with it.  A nice decision--going the extra mile for a friend who doesn't have a problem with his drinking but will surely appreciate not having to be the only sober one in the room.

I do hope he ran this past Claire before speaking for her.  Probably there was a phonecall between the last two strips:  "Hey, Faye's having a party tonight!  Come over!  And, uh, hey, since Faye's on the wagon, maybe it'd be nice if we..."

Well, I say I've done it. I built a box for my sister and I got all fancy with the way I cut the wood for the lid. It turned out pretty good, actually. I went to visit her recently, it's a centerpiece of her living room, and it's way nicer-looking than I remember it being.

I suspect her mass, given the military nature of her armor, is heavy as fuck. I also think she's so used to it at this point that she doesn't sit on anything she can't guarantee is able to hold her weight

That said, I'm still thinking that this whole arc is a two-pronged plot (Bubbles anti-social behaviour and Faye's continued vulnerability to addictive behaviour) leading up to Bubbles agreeing to be Faye's companion. Why? Because they both have serious problems that needs them having someone around most of the time to help confront.

I also desperately want to see a one-side conversation between Emily and Bubbles. If there was anyone who could effortlessly ignore a 'I do not socialise' stony silence, it would be her!

Faye is a very mercurial personality, something that fits in with her possible depression and alcoholism. She has sharp ups and downs in mood sometimes, so being hyper gung-ho about something is in-character.

Another characteristic of hers is to completely repress her own feelings and hide her pain out of a desire to 'spare' her friends in some way. Her attitude will be: "It's a party - I want everyone to have a good time! I want Bubbles to make friends with Marty, Dora, Hanners and the rest. I mustn't let my problems get in the way of this!"
