I think he noticed he made a typo, then made a slightly silly one the next day, and then decided to just start doing alt text there (instead of hover text like xkcd/DoA).

He might have taken a bit of inspiration from Something Positive as well.

Dale sounds like he's got OG Good Guy syndrome. Plays the light side, does all the side quests to help the pesky townsfolk, and possibly actually got the Amulet of Yendor. I already liked him, but... even moreso.
