MrWoodchip:
Just a few days ago, I was thinking about how QC as a whole has become steadily less relatable to my life. As a swordsman, this is no longer the case. Woo.
For real though, HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) is the best thing ever. You get to hit people with swords, and they don't call the police! In fact, they give you one of those handshake hug things and pass you a beer.
Granted, the swords are made of polypropylene/vinyl or blunted metal, but even so...

Never used one, just rattan and live steel.

These ones are great, but have a really high centre of balance. If you put some lead pellets in the pommel though, they're pretty much the perfect bastard sword.

nah, aside from the poor balance, the blades are far too rigid for safe sparring. even through a padded fencing jacket, you're risking a broken rib if you take a hard thrust with one of those things. these ones are much better; they're well balanced, flexible enough to be safe without being 'whippy', and by all accounts practically indestructible.

Yes, Mid-evil; it is semi-evil, quasi-evil, the margarine of evil, the diet coke of evil, just one calorie, not evil enough.

There actually is a guy in Northampton who does that.

I had help. I made a comment in last week's thread about possibly needing to know if anyone taught swordsmanship in the Northampton area, and BenRG sent me some links he had googled. There is a small chance my family may be moving out that way in a few months so it's something I need to research. This is the kind of swordfighting my son would like to do - we tried classic fencing but it wasn't his thing. He's now taking a kids' historical weapons class that uses foam swords for safety rather than real swords.
I don't know if the medieval swords guy in Northampton teaches kids or not. The info on his site seems geared towards adults, and anything to do with teaching kids is a nightmare of licensing and insurance so I wouldn't blame the guy if he doesn't want that kind of hassle.
