No great surprise; the circus is a relic of a different time in entertainment, from before home entertainment, animal rights and mobile game apps. It might have survived if it had been willing to proactively change with the times at least as far as animal rights went (because live shows have their own charm that no electronic gadget can match) but, in the end, they dug in their heels and only changed in the face of great demand when they were already losing audiences.

Circuses survive in some form, just like arcades and vaudeville did.

But yeah, i hear you.

Cirque du Soleil is alive and well in an age of "home entertainment, animal rights and mobile game apps". Unwillingness to adapt to change, rather than change itself, is probably what doomed these companies.
