Elliot seems unaware that he might be attractive to women. Clearly he needs to get out more.

I think Elliot has more wherewithal than that, but not enough to really think about why Renee would want him to take his shirt off.  Wacky hijinks is probably as common a thing at the Secret Bakery as it is at Coffee of Doom.

USS Martenclaire:
Renee...you're the one that screwed up here and pur Elliot in a potentially uncomfortable position, do why are you glaring at him like he crapped in your cereal?

Because he's being so sweet and innocent that acting mad is probably the only way to stop herself from glomping him and possibly frenching him there and then. After being verbally reprimanded by your boss for inappropriate behaviour to a co-worker, that is not an impulse to which you wish to succumb.

So, yeah, Marten's worst fears are true: This is a romantic comedy show.

OldGoat:

A most accurate and excellent metaphor.

I could swear I remember a strip a long time ago where someone else said "We're FRIENDS?!" in exactly the same way, but I can't remember who said it or when it was. Early Hanners, maybe?
