I also think Claire is being sincere - not because she's interested in clocks, but because she likes Brun and is willing to listen to her new friend talk about her hobby.

And I also think Claire is having to consciously and deliberately suppress her desire to pump Brun for information about where things stand between Brun and Clinton. Claire's being good and not meddling in her brother's business. But if Brun brings Clinton up on her own, Claire will jump at the chance to talk about it.
