What's so unimaginable about the idea that he find another, similarly menial, position somewhere after a bunch of applications and interviews with a bit of experience and a decent reference?

Most employers outside of very specified fields really don't care what your degree was in. Hell, most menial labour jobs don't even require a degree. Marten will find another job, that's not even an issue. Will it be a cushy one where he was able to blackmail board members into giving him a better salary and benefits? Likely not, but he'll be able to feed himself just fine. Doubly so if they move anywhere off the coasts where the cost of living isn't so ridiculous.
