I recall an older strip where Sven was compared to the kid who got the GI Joe aircraft carrier for Christmas. I can’t remember his response, but I know he used to play with those as a kid so I’m assuming his familiarity is largely passing.  Moreover, country music has a lot of patriotic lyrics so he’s probably done some research too.

I was going to point out that the Scout salute was similar to the French General as shown in that photo earlier, but a quick google image search shows that the American Scout salute has devolved into the modern US military style karate chop.

Digging deeper or back in time [Normal Rockwell paintings] and the US scout salute was with the palm forward, tips of fingers to the brim of ones head covering, same as with the founder.

(click to show/hide)I really want an original Scout stetson - old ones cost a dear amount and as for a new one goes, only the RCMP has them made for their own use now

Bit of background on a salute historically

It was to demonstrate that no weapon was in hand or hidden in ones palm as opposed to the drawn sword vertical in front of ones face style used by knights

We shake with the right hand for the same reason - to show that we do not carry a weapon in hand to the person you are greeting
The Scout handshake is with the left since that is the hand normally carrying the shield - shows implicit trust in the person you are greeting.

I hadn't realized how much the uniforms or the programs have changed since I was last fully active in the movement all those years ago.
I looked up a replacement shirt since I have outgrown my old one and thought I was inadvertently on the Young Pioneer [CCCP] page.
Looking over the wiki I am not sure of the differences any more.
Oh right - Canadian here for those I may have confused - we went co-ed officially in '92 but the experiment started in '76

Everybody bags on country music. Why?

Oh well, just so long as you leave bluegrass and folk music alone.

(click to show/hide)Speaking of bluegrass, here's a bluegrass cover of 'Stuck in the Middle With You'

(click to show/hide)Another theory about the salute is that it came from holding up the visor of your helmet, so people could see your face, or at least your eyes.
Also, we usually don't use the left hand for handshakes because we had to use ... something before toilet paper was invented. Yes: we used to wipe our butt with the left hand, and that's why it's considered rude using your dirty hand for a greeting.

I am just happy he is using the proper hand.
