I knew I'd be learning some new botany with this thread, but I didn't expect to learn terms like "false fruit".

I think we may be nitpicking a bit too much here... in fact, I'll add to it by noting that Wikipedia begins its article on false fruits with: "An accessory fruit (sometimes called false fruit, spurious fruit, pseudofruit, or pseudocarp) is a fruit in which..." (emphasis mine).

Given that we seem to have already accepted apples, which are another kind of ‘false fruit’, I figure dates, pears, mulberries, etc. are fine too.

"Pseudocarp" sounds like it should be a kind of false fish, instead.
