Tova:
They’re talking about his music, but we all know that the conversation is really about his relationships.
BenRG:
I'm actually not so sure. On the surface, yes, this could be a metaphor for Sven and May: If he really wants to do something different, should he have the determination to follow it up and damn the public image or should he wonder if the trouble it will cause him outweighs what few benefits seem to be on offer? For a public figure, that can be a very real and difficult equation to solve. Remember, they aren't in a relationship yet and May has blown quite cold on the subject, so there isn't even anything to fight for, just yet.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if this is mildly autobiographical for Jeph. He's experimented with new genres in his time and, as is always the case, they don't always succeed. Maybe this isn't metaphorical at all but, rather, Jeph remarking on how difficult it is to do new stuff and the emotional issues that can strike home when dealing with the reception for that work.
Carl-E:
This got rather interesting pretty quickly, Sven's bad reaction to Dora's observation seems to indicate that she's come fairly close to the truth!
Then again, his observation is pretty self-aware.
I look forward to seeing where this goes!
Tova:

--- End quote ---
I wasn't saying it was a metaphor for Sven and May specifically. More for the way he approaches relationships generally.
I also wasn't saying it was a metaphor. The two situations are fundamentally the same. His unwillingness to commit to an artistic path and his unwillingness to let himself be vulnerable in a relationship both stem from his unwillingness to move out of his comfort zone and take risks.
He's too comfortable, both artistically and personally.
Tova:
Conversation rewritten so that how I'm reading it is crystal clear.
(click to show/hide)"Stop me if I'm being dumb here, but you must get rejections for your casual flings, right?"
"Sure. She isn't into the same kind of sex, my pick up lines don't work, that sort of thing."
"Then why did you give up on meaningful relationships after one setback?"
And the rest of the conversation is identical.
