Here's another critically-acclaimed flop that I absolutely adore (though much more recent and a very different genre): 2015's TowerClimb. This is hands-down my favorite roguelite. Really love the atmosphere and music, and the game does a fantastic job of balancing randomization and consistent level features, such that each playthrough feels fresh-yet-focused, and each individual segment has its own unique identity.
