WCDT - 13th to 17th December 2021 - (Strips 4676 - 4680)
BenRG:
Well, Jeph is off on his usual end-of-year European holidays so his updates are going to be at various times, giving the opportunity for we non-Patreons to know the likely theme of the new week's strips well in advance.
What do you think? Is Yay looking for a mother or father figure? Or is Roko enough of a big sister/family mom to keep them in line?
haikupoet:
I'm not sure what to make of the fact that Yay started out as strictly androgynous and is now pretty obviously soft-butch-feminine-presenting. Maybe they're experimenting with different looks for different bodies?
Farideh:
I don't think Yay needs a parent figure, they are perfectly capable of looking after themselves. What they do need is someone to help them be more mature socially/emotionally, and a solid friend group will help with that.
Re. Yay's appearance; they seemed female-presenting to me straight from the beginning, so there doesn't seem to be a difference for me.

I hadn't really noticed, but now that I compare from an early appearance, I agree.
Mind, it is pretty normal for Jeph to change his mind about characters after their first appearance. Check this little footnote:

He's decided now they are lovely, I guess.
haikupoet:
Okay, now that I reread that arc, Yay frikkin’ radiates Teen Edgelord Energy. They had tremendous power from being a distributed intelligence, and knew to follow the Spiderman principle, but being essentially an adolescent, they made a big show of it, like teenagers do. Now Yay is a bit tired of being That Thing In The Shadows and is trying to acclimate to society. Basically, we are now in the process of watching them grow up.
