After seeing other people's difficulties with this one, I tried a new strategy (for me) - my first three guesses had no repeated letters (even the marked ones), which left a pretty easy answer at that point.

That's what I usually do with my first two guesses. Keeps me from getting it in two (except for one time), but it can be helpful.

I don't use that strategy, and I have hard mode set on my main desktop to prevent me from doing so (it's not set on my phone, but I play it that way regardless).
