My strategy at present is to start with words with less common letters to eliminate as many as possible early so as to reduce the choices later.

I think one reason my weird word works fairly well is that it eliminates some letters that are common in pairs, so you also eliminate all those potential pairings. I'd like to see an information theory video about the game considering pairs instead of individual letters.
