Sometimes, it's pretty clear that a parent never had any real interest in their child except for the implied social contract and/or state child support money. The moment that there is the opportunity to hand over responsibility to someone else, either through leaving the family, sending them off to a distant relative or through state education, then they're gone.

Every child deserves parents. Not all parents deserve children.

I'm not sure it's really denial. I see it more like an attempt to comfort the other person, even if they don't need it.
