Gingers have always been gross, redheads have always been hot.

i.e. Someone with that colour hair who is hot, is a redhead. Someone with that colour hair who is ugly, is a ginger.

thehollow:
I always gathered that gingers were more specific than just red hair- red hair, pale skin, and lots of freckles. Redhead is just anyone with red hair.
