Yup. I'm only missing a few Sorrows releases, some solo demos, The Poems only album, and the album she did with Bjork and Bjorks sister.

Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On

9.8/10. I can't put why I love this track so much into words, I'm just gay for anything with a decent female vocalist in and that really hit the spot. A+ will listen to again, repeatedly. :)

808 State - Cubik

Fun, clanky techno. Makes me think of a big ass robot in the jungle, just going nuts. The beat was pretty annoying, but the (I'm guessing intentionally) horrid guitar lines and silly synth stuff was all pretty rad. This song had a lot of gaps and places where alternate melody lines and shit could've been filled in, and it was a bit over-simplistic, but it was fun and glitchy and I liked it.

6/10

Whaaaat, MBV play surf now? Crank this one.

Downloaded both, but I'm going to do the A.D. Tarantule One cause I like it better.

A.D. Tarantula - The Century Trilogy

Excellent track. The opening riff is very catchy and quite rocking, but still kinda odd or skewed sounding. After that part the song goes into a whole other direction, had a nice orchestral part with a similiar feel to the Godfather theme I guess, but again more skewed, like there was something wrong with it. The track rocks out briefly again and then another classical sounding part comes in and finishes the whole thing. 8/10

I like this, the only issue I'd have with it is that it's maybe a bit too repetitive. I mean, the bits that repeat are good, but for an instrumental it doesn't really go anywhere. Then again I'm not overly familiar with Irish folky instrumentals so I can't really compare it to similar tunes or anything. It's definitely enjoyable. 7/10

Typical - I came in to make a review, and it's something I already have.

It also says a lot about the average age on these forums that there's someone who hasn't heard this one, because the KLF achieved near-total media saturation with it.

Well, I've never willingly listened to any music radio in my life apart from the odd spurt of classic FM whilst studying, so it's unsurprising.

The KLF - What Time Is Love (LP Mix)

Starts off very low and eerie, with some jazzy sort of vocal things, and then some guy starts singing about the Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu. Then it samples MC5 and turns into total dark techno track. Then rapping starts, which is a shame, because it brings the track down in my view. The sireny techno bits are pretty sweet and whatnot, but the rapper annoys me. Some nice variation and fake crowd moments and whatnot as it goes on though. But that rapper should just shut up.

I'll give it 6/10.

Now for some awesome extreme old-school apocalyptic folk.

Ah, well - maybe you'd like this a bit more - same band, but more of the jazzy stuff and no rap.

Meanwhile, back at the review:

Changes - Fire of Life (unreleased version)

And I can see why it wasn't released.  The rhythm keeps dropping in and out, the tune is boring and the singer is a perfect example of the old joke about how to tell the difference between a folk singer and the audience - the singer is the guy who only has a finger in one ear.  Someone needs to beat this droning bastard to death with his own guitar, before he performs again.  1/10, and that's for not being chart crap.

While I go to give my ears an enema, please ponder on this:

Changes - Fire For Life

So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly. So goddam jangly.

Now that I've done that:
This song was pretty simple. Two steelstring guitars and throaty, dramatic vocals. Very dischordant and ambiguous in time. The end of this one was really really good: it shifts into this alternate chord pattern and eventually rises into a jangly cacophony and ends. Fun stuff.

7/10

MORE REVIEWING:

Gibbons, Beth & Rustin Man - Resolve

MORE FOLK. Good simple guitar line and high, airy vocals. Pretty stereotypical, straightforward one-acoustic-guitar-folk (except, you know, there's a bass {?} too). Decent lyrics.

5/10, just for lack of originality, and cause I'm not in the goddam mood.

Somethin easy, classic, and damn sure good.

The Flaming Lips-In the Morning of the Magicians
-How can I not like this track? I've got several Flaming Lips albums, but I've not heard this one before. Overall the track has quite a loungey vibe to it, and Wayne Coyne's vocals sound softer than usual to the point were they make me think of jelly...sssmmooth jelly. 8/10

I was actually going to do Skullflower but I forgot, Skullflower is pop-rock compared to this one.

Smegma - Thru The Warty Evening

Pure madness. All sorts of weird drone-like noodling in the bagground while the lead singer recitates, shall we say, unorthodox poetry. Music'n'poetry(while totally unlike say Soul Coughing) from the abyss of psychedelica is what this song(or should I say piece) sounds like to me. It is quite improvisational as far as I can tell and while not lacking cohesion, it lacks normal song structure. The bass pounds monotonously with drums joining in, the clanky guitar screeches and squeals never really playing any melody. The vocals are unremarkably spoken word-like, though they have some manical glee(specifically around "her slimy diatribe" and "riding with one hand then let one go". For me this is the kind of stuff that has novelty and indeed entertainment but not something I would listen to incessantly.
However I enjoyed the experience so it gets a 7/10.

Now as promised the Bark Psychosis track. This is from their debut Hex which was released in 1994.

Bark Psychosis - Pendulum Man

Very subdued, post-rock sort of opening, one note sort of oscillating in its own chorus effect for a bit, then slowly swelling synth strings as we get in around the one minute mark. The guitar line slowly changing as the sound slowly builds up. Very, very nice so far. Then another little swell of sound on the keys, and the guitar, if that's what it is, changing to become like a clock tick-tocking. Complexity and layers slowly building up...and so it goes on really. Very peaceful, very ambient. I quite like it. 8/10

Now, I tried to post this before, but it didn't work. Here's hoping it will this time. This track is just beautiful:

Current 93 - Hosey

It starts out with some Spoken word, and the ominous "Dum Dum Dum" of a bass. Losts of stuff about suffering, grey shaded worlds, etc. The lead has an english accent, and the style is not offputting, but it's not catchy either. some chords come in, and he repeats a chorus, but that doesn't make any sense if this is supposed to be spoken word, and because he's not really singing. He just started Howling, and some sweet flute music broke in, sounds native american. He's talking about Christ's Black blood, and confessionals. This isn't very musically complex, and I could probably play all the parts myself including the flute and the bass... at the same damn time. The flute is the best thing about this, through the whole thing there isn't singing, he's kind of talking in a lilting, excited, half sane ramble. Some synth just came in, and the flute left :(. It's really long. Finished, it's morbid, and hard to follow, but it's not horrible and he gets points for being different.

6/10.

Dragonforce - Through the Fire and Flames

Dragonforce are probably one of the most ridiculous bands in heavy metal today. Not funny ridiculous like Manowar, but just sad.
The song starts of with an Atari like intro that is played fast. Too fast. Baisically, the whole song is just "woo! look at us! we have great hair and we play really really fast! vvvvrrrrroooooommmmm". Seriously, stop it. They are obviously very talented musicians, but they are also useless because they showcase their talents in such a masturbatory way.

That is pretty amazing. Starts out with a sweet acoustic riff, soon joined by another guitar and then drums. A woman starts to sing and the guitars change slightly. The drumming is fast but still very restrained, very good. The guitarwork is what stands out the most though. Not because they are at the forefront of the mix, but because their riffs seem to be constantly evolving, there are really no repeated parts to speak of, but it still sounds remarkably coherent. After listening to the song twice through I don't remember any distinct melodies or riffs, just that the whole of it was pretty awesome. The singer is fine, all the vocal melodies are good, but a rougher style might have suited the song better. The bass doesn't stand out much, but provides a solid backbone behind the complex guitar interplay. 9/10

Some seriously groovy drumming here, and the riffing is really cool. Normally, the kind of vocals in this song would really annoy me but for some reason I like it. I also love how you can really hear the bassist in this. The lyrics are nifty, too, I'm not sure exactly what it's about but it's got me nodding my head.

Well, I am not much for death/doom whatever it is metal... mainly because of the unintelligible ape groans from bands like this. The music itself seems somewhat decent in a non-offensive sort of way. I just kept waiting for it to take away attention from the voice, but it kept on staying subdued and letting that horrible gurgling stay in the foreground. The last half minute of the song was decent so I'll give it a...

Man Man - Feathers

Started off with a minor, but still somehow jaunty little guitar figure, building up and whatnot quite lightly. Semi-hoarse processed or multiple voices with not a little hint of Tom Waits in them break in. Actually quite a nice song. 8/10.

Now, in keeping with the theme of todays strip, I simply must provide more metal. It saddens my heart that, these days, kids just have no idea what metal is all about. So I picked something really musically uplifting and pretty damn balls to the wall, though some would disagree with me. More horrible snarly voices I'm afraid.

Arch Enemy - Angelclaw

I challenge you to listen from about 3:15 to 3:30 and tell me that fast guitar playing is not emotional.

Arch Enemy-Angelclaw

I didn't really enjoy this song. It may have been the low quality encoding but it just sounded messy. The guitar playing was skillful but the recording and vocals really let it down for me. Other Arch Enemy songs have really blown me away but this just left me hanging. I want more power and less frills. At the end of the day it's just guitar wankery and not even amazing guitar wankery either.

The build up parts are very good, and almost menacing in places. I'd listen to this in my car as i drove on a rainy day I think. then hit 100 when it hit the loud part in the track. The fadeout is quite something. And gave me a little shudder down my spine.

So yes: I recommend it. It's good mood music for me I think.

A hearty 6/10. pretty average. but with ace guitar noodling.

I put forward:

Sure, you've heard Lightsaber Cocksucker Blues . . . but have you ever heard it sung by kittens?

i haven't looked in here for a while now.
hmm. there seem to be two tracks, if you count the kittens. so:

kittens and mclusky -- lightsaber cocksucking blues

what can i say. i like mclusky. i like kittens. the lead-singing kitten's eyes kind of scared me a bit. that's one mf my favourite mclusky songs (but not quite 'She Will Only Bring You Happiness' with that wonderful line about their old singer being a sex criminal). so i reckon i'd give this maybe a 7 or 8 out of 10 all up.

the pipettes -- tell me what you want (this being the song that started playing when i opened their myspace page)

hmm. their name was cool. unfortunately, that's about where it stops. unbeknownst to a lot of people here (and in the world) i have an inexplicable soft spot for twee pop. this, however, misses the mark. i think it's the strings and the backing vocalists. so maybe 4 out of 10, mainly for the name and the matching outfits.

anyway, here's my one.

DJ Scotch Egg -- Scotch Attack

some background: despite the name, DJ Scotch Egg is japanese. he lives in england now though i think. this is from his album KFC Core, a half-hour breakcore album produced with a couple of gameboys and a megaphone over the course of 30 days during which time the guy ate nothing but KFC. this isn't my favourite track from the album, but it's the only one i have to hand at the moment.

ok go!

DJ Scotch Egg - Scotch Attack

I really like this actually, the middle section on 00:49 is very nintendo-like. Very glitchy, which i like in my breakcore. I'm considering getting a hold of this album.

and here's mine

10 cities - Snake & Jet's amazing bullit band

OH LORD. this is just the sort of thing that ought to play when I walk in a room. For some reason I walk to a funk that no-one else hears, and I've never been able to find it in song form. Wild Cherry once came close for a while, but this is... this is it.

On a technical level, I love the shiny little "globble" sounds that split up what could have come from the Funk Age anyway, but modernised to a firm and steady filmic pace. The piano is good, the sound overall is good, plus it's a winner on a genre that I love.

9/10. Mark deducted for lack of lyrics to sing along to.

Next song: "Paparazzi" - Shugo Tokumaru (warning: twinkly!)

(edit) Point. Sorry about that, peeps.

FROST* - Hyperventilate

The song starts with some flutes, playing rather ambient lines. A piano comes in, and plays a line for a few minutes untill a seriously good prog' metal kicks into action, making this song even more interesting.
This is, to make it short, very good prog' metal. It's not re-inventing anything, but it's still excellent, and I will be checking them out.

edit: totally forgot the score

8.7/10

Dornenreich-Wer Hat Angst Vor Ensamkeit.

This was indeed an interesting song. It has some pretty outstanding instrument work, particularly the guitar, which is epic enough to have a battle to. There is one very major flaw,however..the vocals. I'm sorry, but these are awful, awful vocals, even for this genre of music. I might be more forgiving of the vocals if it didn't seem like they were actually taking themselves seriously while shrieking them.
