My guess? Some kind of database error triggered by using the '?' character in the user name. I bet that's a search or sorting modifier so it's making his user name look like a wildcard or something.

It's supposed to handle any character in a name, as I understand it; but I can see where you're coming from.

I got an error while posting, which is probably why it didn't change my post count.

This is going to be confusing, but I'm not real; I'm within an infinitesimal epsilon of the real axis.

It's complex.

I suppose I would remain complex, unless I multiplied all values by i.

Hmmm.

*Insert math*

Well, I'm still partially real. But I'm also in the Mandelbrot set. So that's something I didn't know.

We forumites are triply imaginary. We exist only in the mind of Marten Reed who exists only in the mind of Jeph Jacques who in turn is just an idea in the mind of God. What should we do then? Simple -- party till the lights go out.

You haven't even begun to go down the Rabbit Hole yet.

We're actually all Tai's fictive headmates (That's why she seems like the voice of the forum.  She can HEAR us.)

Meanwhile, Tai is a figment of Marten's imagination.  It's a whole Tyler Durden thing.  Marten's actually the one dating Dora again, he's just being more direct and assertive.

Marten on the other hand is himself Faye's imaginary friend, who she made up to tell her shrink about to mask her own feelings for Dora, as the whole comic is just Faye's recounting of her life to her therapist.  Except...

Faye is an imaginary patient that Dr. Corinne created to forge a case study for her dissertation.

Dr. Corinne on the other hand is a character in Yelling Bird's imagination.

Yelling Bird is one of Sweet-Tits' hallucinations.

Sweet-Tits is one of Shebly's imaginary friends who he (she?) creates when he's lonely.

Shebly himself is Jeph's real dog Shelby's fictitious Mary Sue that Shelby imagines always has these adventures outside of the house.

Except that Shelby is just a figment of Jeph's syphilis-ridden mind.

And Jeph Jacques himself is a figment of the real creator of the universe, Randy. He's a bandicoot.

So (doing the math) we're all decuply imaginative.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I defer to the original radio series, which does not have the added statement.  The number of times it has happened is irrelevant, after all.

What's really interesting is that Douglas Adams made every version (radio, miniseries, books, and film) very different.  Once the earth is blown up, they diverge wildly.  I heard that the movie was written specifically for an American audience, which would explain why it's so different from the others, most notably in having what's reasonably close to a happy ending.

I always read Claire's expression in panel 2 as worry that Tai would embarrass her and try to set her up with Marten right there, and panel 3 as surprise that Tai would put the question to Emily so bluntly.  Of course, this is the same Tai who foisted the interns on Marten on their first day so she could get high and watch Adventure Time, so Claire should be used to bluntness by now.

It seems to me that Claire's crush really went into full swing at the wedding. She saw what Marten is really like in private moments, and he treated her with all the respect she deserves.
