I'm still annoyed that Lefty Frizzel hasn't got a mention in this thread. I'm taking an American Roots Music class right now and when we went over the Western Swing, Honky Tonk and a few other styles that Country music was bred out of I fell in love. Hank Williams was amazing, but Lefty really left me blown away.
Modern country evolved out of what was Western Swing, Honky Tonk, Comboy Songs, Blue grass and, to a lesser degree, Anglo-American Balladry.
But yes, the roots of Country Music kick ass. Now everyone else shut up!
