I've been teaching myself Blender for a while, but the learning curve is very steep. I am impressed with that jet-engine/ducted fan thing; I have not attempted anything of such complexity yet.

It isn't actually that bad. It's a deformed cylinder - I can't remember how I did it, I think I added a two-loop cut around the long faces which I scaled up a bit and then subsurfed. The red cap is the front of that cylinder clipped off and retextured. The central lump is a sphere that's been scaled along only one axis. The fan vanes are twisted planes that I put a 0.5 cm solidify modifier on and then duplicated.

If you want complexity, try looking over here, although that's a good recipe for just getting demoralised and giving up.

EDIT: A bit of progress, though not as much as I'd have liked...
