@Khar: I bet you'd hate most of the music I listen to. All of friends love Cradle of Filth so I have been subjected to years of listening to them. The only songs I remotely like are 'Mannequin' and 'Amor e Morte', but otherwise I'd be happy to destroy every CD they've ever published. Yeah, they probably are lovely blokes/their music is 'from the heart' and whatnot, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.

Yeah, I was drunk. Thing is, those aren't even particularly good songs by them. I mean, have you ever heard any of their earlier stuff? The two songs I mentioned above are prime examples, but 'The Black Goddess Rises', 'The Forest Whispers My Name' and 'Haunted Shores' are other particularly good ones. Even later on they'd churn out the occasional killer like 'Scorched Earth Erotica' or 'Lord Abortion'. Cradle only became musically dull on about half the songs on Midian, and then totally on DAAD. As for Dani's personality, big whoop. Unless it really comes across in the music what does a bands personalities etc. really matter? It's the music they make, and you can't disagree that, at least until the recent semi-dumbing down, he wrote some of the best lyrics in the genre. Finally, I can always respect him and cradle, because they did work pretty hard to get where they are: they pretty much built the bandwagon that everyone else jumped on as far as Gothic Black Metal goes. If anyone should be disrespected it's obvious Cradle clones such as Illnath, but as 'Cast Into Fields of Evil Pleasure' was superior to pretty much everything Cradle's done in the past five years, they too can be forgiven. The only manufactured band in metal is Dream Evil, a fact everyone seems to forget and indeed, totally forgive. Because DE rule. I'll stop now before another tangent gets me.

It's my humble opinion that Cradle of Filth reached their "gothic black metal" pinnacle with Dusk.. And Her Embrace.  Everything since then has been downhill (Some small steps:  Dusk.. And Her Embrace --> Cruelty And The Beast..  But also larger steps:  Midian --> Damnation And A Day)

If CoF would have kept a steady lineup, taken themselves a little more seriously, and kept singing about vampires then perhaps this wouldn't have happened.

As for Illnath, well, I haven't heard them, but I do happen to like Hecate Enthroned - a band whose first few albums could be considered "COF clonage."  Perhaps you should send me some on MSN sometime, Khar.

Bad Samaritan:
The first thing that comes to mind is Modest Mouse. I dont know why, but every time I hear them, I just want to smash whatever speakers they happen top be spewing out of.

Followed quickly by Britney Spears, who deserves to have her large intestine pounded by a howitzer, and then be shot into deep space.

muffy:
Britney doesn't have a large intestine, or indeed a small one.
Just a really long cervix.

--- Quote from: a pack of wolves ---If you're going to slag off a whole genre, at least have some idea what bands constitute it. Funeral For A Friend? I mean really, get a clue.

I've entirely given up arguing the whole "that's not what emo is" thing, it's really gone too far for it to be worth it.

Interestingly, I listened to some Rites of Spring and I didn't think it was very good.

I like Sunny Day Real Estate though :)

a pack of wolves:
I don't mind too much about the misuse of the term in general, I try to just ignore it, but when people bash the entire genre when they blatantly haven't got any idea whatsoever about it it pisses me off more than it really should do.
