Whatever you think of the guy, you have to admire someone who has the guts to go on a massive TV show in the US and accuse the president of being delusional and a class A idiot by way of a song - just because it's a popular opinion doesn't mean it's not impressive to see it on something so institutional.
Not so sure about the Jack White chic though, but hey, that makes it all the more funny.

dear conor,

please do not dress to match the background lighting. we liked you better when you weren't jack white, part two.

thank you.

p.s. - somewhere in washington, d.c., the president is marvelling over a catchy little song he heard on leno the other night.

That was so great. It takes some balls to go on national TV and perform something like that song.

But what was with the outfit? I didn't like it x_x

Guys I don't want to overrate Oberst but that gave me really eerie vibes of Johnny Cash.

Except for the stupid outfit.

I think the outfit was done on purpuse... to kind of mock the President who is so proud of his Texan-Cowboy heritage.

I hate Bright Eyes.

I mean, I've gone on huge rants before on how much I don't like Bright Eyes.

But holy shit.

That was wonderful.

i was just about to say that :-/

I dunno, it's not like no one else has ever critisized our president, or we live in a country where it would mean the end of your life, so it really isn't that ballsy.

Cool though I suppose

I dunno... these days saying that on such a widely watched show still takes some balls. Not a big fan of Bright Eyes though.

I actually think it's pretty dull and even a cheap shot of sorts. I mean, it's almost a fashion thing to hate George W. Bush, and I don't consider this daring or even controversial, since nearly everyone is doing it!

Frankly it bores me... though I found the god thing amusing

See, that's my issue.  I can't tell and I don't know you well enough to make that call.

As for my sexuality, if it makes you happy to think I'm gay go for it.  I don't care all that much.

Anyway, I'm continually pissed off at Conor Oberst, but I think this was pretty cool.  I mean, it's not a brilliant critique of the president, but the "does what God says ever change his mind?" line was pretty good.

Dear Connor Oberst,

Stick to writing shitty, warbely songs about your dead baby brother and calanders.  The Desaparecidos suck, this song sucks, and your ironic cowboy hat sucks.  Nothing you said here is backed up by any facts and are nothing but the rantings of an ill-informed flaming liberal.  All you have done is taken all the stupid shit people say on TV and the internet and set it to music.  This is not impressive, creative, or controversial - it's public opinion.  And, while being a flaming liberal is okay - and sometimes pretty cool, being ill-informed always sucks.  Please, stick to emo.  Politics just aren't for  you.

Love,

Nothingwitty

(PS - I think "Lifted" was a keen album.)

Edit - man, when I clicked the title here "Conor owning up", I thought he was going admit on national television that everything he's done post-"Letting Off the Happiness" was contrived bullshit.  Man, I was let
down.

Edit2 - Man, already beaten to the whole "Dear Connor," letter gag.  I'm not funny.

It's not his best song by a long shot, and was definitely a case of message above style, and the message is a popular one,

BUT,
what made it impressive was to have it seemingly endorsed by something as huge as Leno. That's not to say that it's the only statement that's been made in mainstream culture ever about the fact that George Bush is a twat, but it's a good thing to have it so boldly stamped across the TV, just to remind people.
Conor's in a position of influence, even if only over fawning teenage girls and insecure indie kids, I just hope to God he doesn't start turning into Bono.

And I preferred the songs about drowning babies too :)

locking this.  we've got the point, and i can see this slowly turning into a "HURR, GW SUCKS", "DURRR, NO HE DOESN'T" thread.  arguing about politics is like milking a truck.
