Do you already have an apple id?  If not, make one on apple's web page and then try the iTunes thing again that way...

Once you have it made sign into iTunes using it.

What format/quality do iTunes songs come in?

protected aac format., and usually 128kbps.

I have seen higher than 128, and engadget (or slashdot?) reported that it is more frequent now to see beter quality on itunes, because the record companies encode the files, not apple.

I think I'll stick to ripping .ogg's myself.
