How do others respond to your musical taste?
El Opium:
I'm sure most people here run into others who just don't get what they listen to. Being a bit of noise head myself people tend to think my stereo is broken or that I'm not quite right in the head. Annoying people is part of the fun though. Putting on a drone record you like but no one else can stand is a good way to get some peace.
Johnny C:
They're mostly just used to my music tastes being obscure by now. Either that or, when I meet people who don't know me that well, I explain that the music I listen to is below mainstream radar.
Pip Monkey-Dick:
I get made fun of. Mainly by nihilist, though also by other people.
I have very eclectic (and bad) tastes. Such as our lady peace, the bloc party, the cure, the clash, morrisey, etc.
Though I have been lucky enough to meet someone with worse taste than me. Just stand near him, and my music seems tolerable by comparison.

Fix'd. Sorry, I just had to put that buffer zone in between the Clash and Morrisey for my own peace of mind - having The Only Band That Matters next to the King of Whinge was just too much for me!
Sorry, I know that's the kind of shit this thread's trying to avoid. Good god, though, I loathe Morrisey . . . Anyway, I listen to such a variety of music that people usually say "Cool" to one thing and "Ewww!" to another. It's not unusual for me to listen to an Alison Krauss C.D. followed by Count Basie followed by the Shins followed by X.

It never goes over very well. Usually they say they just don't understand it. I can deal with that. Worse are the people who get some giant hair up their asses about it, as if musical taste is anything other than completely subjective. I can understand certain criticisms ("they can't play their instruments very well", "this is recorded poorly by my standards" - usually I agree with these!), but as the saying goes, there's no accounting for taste. If I were to freak out everytime I was subjected to some music I didn't like, I doubt I'd be able to go very many places or be civil with very many people. As long as people don't pull that "I'm so enlightened about music/I am better than you because I know _____" schtick then turn around and spazz whenever I put on something that's a bit off kilter, I don't really care if they actually like any particular band that I do.
