How do others respond to your musical taste?

My best friend calls it alarm clock music. I don't know, but his taste isn't so great though. He listens to streetpunk, bands like The Casualties and The Unseen. When we go tagging, he always sprays ska sucks just to piss me off, which does, because he's never heard of Propagandhi and self-titles him as a punk. To torture him sometimes when he's over my house, I'll put on some Streetlight Manifesto and maybe skank circles around him. Most of my other friends don't really mind my music tasts, or don't have anything negative to say about it.

Either my 'friends' go 'what is this? I like it.' and then when I tell them, and they recognize it, they go 'Oh...I didn't think they made this kind of music.'
Or some other people ask me what things are, and I say 'I don't know.' or 'music' just to piss them off.

I'm one of those bastards that hates it when other people like the music I like after I like it.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but it can only be taken so far. Hopefully not to the extent where they basically idolize you and rip your style.

Most of my friends move in similar musical circles to me and therefore have similarly eclectic tastes, so no-one ever finds it odd to hear me play Toto and then Trencher. People just react on whether they like it or not, but never get confused or hate something for no reason. And my mum likes John Zorn and David Thomas so I never even got the parental disapproval. She'd either not care, or borrow my Tom Waits records.

One thing that I forgot to note in my original post that I really do not appreciate is when people tell me that I listen to such and such a style of music or band "just to be cool." What the hell is that? Does anyone else have to deal with this sort of reaction? I guess the thinking is that since the person I'm talking to hasn't heard the bands I like, I must think that I am cooler than they are just because I like obscure bands. I don't understand this; they're the one assuming things about me based on what sort of music I like, not me! Seriously, if you honestly think you're cooler than someone because you listen to hip indie bands instead of popular music, you're a giant asshole. But if assume that people who listen to unpopular music do so for any different ("more cool") reasons than the rest of the world, then you're ridiculous, and should probably put off buying any music until you've finished reading "I'm OK, You're OK."

it depepnds. almost no-one likes noise in the people i know. but you know, it's one of those things that if you like, you love. there's no middle ground really.

same with drum and bass, to a lesser degree. the dnb community in sydney is pretty small though, so it's always nice meeting someone else who's genuinely into the music (and most people who are into dnb around here are into it proper, not just cos it's cool.)

rest of my music (hip hop, indie things, etc) doesn't generete too muc comment from the people i meet. you know, fairly standard sort of stuff, not too divisive or whatever.

regarding my own music:

my mom is usually "borrowing" my cds. and that's cool, most of her music influenced a lot of what i listen to now.

my dad tries to hide my cds. he's pretty convinced that ani difranco is evil, and that elliott smith will turn me suicidal.

my roommate has given up trying to understand. i don't discuss her lite rock/adult contemporary tendencies, she can leave my music alone.

Oh you poor thing! I used to work in a grocery store and I wanted to shoot myself in the head every time I went to work becuase they played "Easy Rock"...who does that? And living with that. *hugs*

And Elliot Smith is amazingly good. Tell your dad to come talk to me about that....We'll have a frank discussion.

I actually made my mum a CD of stuff I thought she might like, with Feist, Mazzy Star, Azure Ray, Rufus Wainwright etc. She liked it all, with the exception of one track, which she plays for the sole purpose of antagonising the neighbours when they're being particularly obnoxious. The artist? Bright Eyes.
In her words 'it was the most irritating thing I could think of playing'.

I tried, damnit!

I'm really getting tired of all the kids who are trying to be hippies; they wear tye-dye shirts and play their guitars badly at lunchtime. (I bet you anything the only reggae artist they know of is Bob Marley.)

Of course, there are some interesting people that do this too, but they say that they've started to get embarrassed about carrying their guitars around.

oddly enough my highschool's majority was people who listened to 'scremo/emo' type music so my music tastes weren't so crazy at the time (i was a bit of an emo kid back then)

now, people just look at me weird. i seem to go out of my way to cultivate friendships with people who look like they might recognize a couple bands i'm listening too.

as for my parents, there is no pleasing them. my mom has a thing against a half-decent bass line, and my dad is just... well.. he's been listening to really cheesy music lately.. and this was the man that had me listening to Pink Floyd as a youngster. this upsets me.

It's a mixed reaction. From my friends who have similiar tastes in music it's all 'I MUST BORROW THIS CD!' and for the others, it's either indifference or teasing. It depends on what mood they're in.

When people ask me what kind of music I like I generally just say "lots of stuff, mainly indie rock" and they all get excited because they like NME popular rock stuff. So when they ask me what bands I like their faces go blank and they talk about something else. I don't really mind, it would be cool to have friends with my music taste though.

I was having this discussion with one of the girls I work for about loads of Saddle Creek bands and how weird it was that their gigs over here are now really popular...the difference was, I think it's weird in a cool way because people now know who I'm talking about, and she thinks it's weird in a damn, it was my pet thing' way. I do that too at times, but it gets really boring really fast...I tried to be elitist, but then I realised that a) I sucked at it and b) it sucked in general.
I much prefer being a loser.

Friends and I tend to share similar enough tastes, though some of the more twee-popish stuff will get a kind of "what the hell" look. Also more of the rap tends to go either 50/50 with one of my friends, mostly when it get's excesive with the word bitch. My brother is pretty funny "Jesus fucking christ, is this the sort of shit people listen to who turn into school shooters?" He is joking. I think.

On the subject of which, the Columbine lads had pretty good taste: KMFDM* and Rammstein*=teh win. That recent guy wasn't so good though.

*Both the songs that were qouted as having been direct inspiration: KMFDM - Son of a Gun (which is a satirical attack on western 'global policing') and Rammstein - Weisses Fleisch (which is just Rammstein being shocking) are especially nice, and will feature in the soundtrack to my ultra-contraversial, avant-garde, violence-glorifying film of the shootings which takes place from the shooters' POV.

It depends on the band and the people. My mom likes mellow- I'll listen to Elliott Smith or Ed Harcourt or The Mag Fields or something, my dad is more rock-oriented (Sadly, the most "rockin" thing I have in my collection is DFA 1979, with the exception of one former local hardcore band) usually I'll just put on something classic like The Talking Heads or Tom Petty. He does, however, like some of the weirder Camper Van Beethoven too.

My roommate is a preacher's kid and is pretty stereotypically "good-girl". She digs the poppier stuff (just certain songs) by Beulah, NMH, and the Decemberists.

i play "panda panda panda" on loop if my roommate starts getting on my nerves. it's usually only when her boyfriend is over, and it's quite effective.

Usually when I'm kitchen portering the head chef sometimes goes what the shit is that are you lisetening to and then turns it down (the last one was the Arcade Fire) or recommends me to listen to some more metal. he told me to buy him a copy of System of a Down when i was popping into town on my break which i might just do I'm going to put Julette and the Licks on full volume next time I go in.

Oh and the other example was when I was chefing and Zane Lowe put on Anthony and the johnsons another chef said he sounds like he's in pain
