Well, the other night, I saw "Fearless Freaks" which is a movie about the Flaming Lips. It was really good, especially since I like them a lot. We had to drive to Cambridge to see it in this little theatre, though.

So, what movies about bands (or starring members of bands, a la Help!) have you seen? And how were they?

Sorry if there was already a topic similar to this, I've never seen anything like it myself, though.

Instrument is amazing. I'm also a big fan of Smoke which Jem Cohen also made about the incredible Benjamin Smoke. It's pretty depressing though, it was such a loss when he died.

However, Rock 'N' Roll High School starring the Ramones is probably the greatest band movie of all time. It's a cheap Corman exploitation number but actually has a real innocent charm to it, and a lot of Ramones songs. Also worth mentioning is the absolute height of camp which is the Village People movie. Steve Guttenburg actually manages to look gayer than the band!

You wouldn't believe it, but yes, somehow Guttenburg manages it. At one point he's sporting the smallest shorts known to mankind. Sheer genius.

Seriously, why did the big suit never come into fashion?  There are plenty of other styles derived from music!  ;)

On the subject of Talking Heads, David Byrne's "True Stories" is kind of intriguing.  It's no "Stop Making Sense", but that's not what it's supposed to be, even though it does have music by Talking Heads on the soundtrack.

Meatloaf as the bus driver.  Score.

Anyway, I'm torn between The Last Waltz and Black & White Night with Roy Orbison.

The best thing about the Commitments is that singer. That guy has an amazing voice. I never tire of that movie, I see it every year or two and it still seems fresh.

Good album, horrible film. Just.... just horrible. Oliver Reed can't sing, and resolving the story so clearly when the album hinged on the ambiguity was a terrible idea. And there's only so much of Daltrey's blasted mug i can put up with.

I really couldn't get into it. There were some cool bits, but it was actually pretty slow and boring for me.

"Repo Man" is not a "band movie", however the Circle Jerks cameo is awesome beyond words.

"I can't believe I used to like these guys."

I fucking love that movie so much.

Edit: Damn, I forgot the greatest documentary ever... "Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies".  How Todd Philips went from a documentary about the craziest man in the history of rock 'n' roll to "Old School" is anybody's guess.

"Bite it you scum, here I come."
