Knockin on Heaven's Doors
Drizzt982:
Warren Zevon recorded a version at his house as he was dying. So it is pretty fitting. His voice isn't the best, because of the cancer, but it is still an awesome song.
(Also, along the same lines as ForteBass's statement: songs in jazz like "Autumn Leaves" or "When the Saints go Marching In" are standards, and are more often than not public domain as well.)
Inlander:
Depends. What's the time-limit on copyright of a song, as far as performing it goes? I know that for copying the sheet-music, it's 50 years after the composer's death - meaning that copyright of Irving Berlin's songs won't expire until 2039.
La Creme:
I've actually heard quite a number of covers of "You've Really Got Me". Otherwise, I'd have to say the most covered song was either (agreed) "Yesterday" or "Voodoo Child".
muffy:
there are quite a few covers of Teenage Kicks, too...
Most noteably by Busted (yeah!) and, er, Snow Patrol.
ASturge:
My old band used to cover Knockin on Heavens Door!
