Deerhoof. That might even work on the 10 year old.

you must be insane. their tiny brains would explode from trying to comprehend how wrong and awesome and hellish and divine deerhoof is. Panda Panda Panda would give her an annurism

how about you let her make up her own mind on what music to like

obviously you don't force her to listen to it if she doesn't want too. but almost everyone gets thier musical tastes from somewhere, friends, sibilings, whatever. she needs some influence, might as well be good music.

Oh wow ! I have the exact same thing with my cousin. Thing is, she actually came to me asking me to recommend her music, so I said i'd make her a cd...
She likes Maroon 5...
Where can I go with this?
I heard her friends were trying to influence her with Snoop, so I better get in quick...
Also, she's 10...
I'm definitely thinking Shins...
I was also thinking the Killers because they're popular, but I've never actually liked them or listened to them much, but they could be a nice gateway... I duno... I need advice too...

i'd be wary of the killers, they could be a useful middle ground, but you will be running the ragged edge of disaster, not knowing which way she'll fall. be sure to suppliment with mmmm pixies, prehaps decemberists? but they may fall short of entertaining at first. just have it on and soon she'll be singing it

The Residents.

And no, I'm not going to stop suggesting until someone other than A Pack of Wolves checks them out. It's like Khar with his Skyclad.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Yes but I was thinking that good charlotte and simple plan are all pop-punk which will lead to punk.
Whereas Maroon 5 is a little more.. upbeaty pop, I'm kinda cool with the world... And could lead to things like the Shins.
Fuck I have no idea actually... I just can't see my cousin being into punk.

The Residents aren't punk. The Residents have their own genre: Fucking amazing.

...sorry, did someone say something.

And as stated, I already have my sister listening to Skyclad ^_^. I await the day she realises what Polkageist! is actually about, and gives me a slapping.

Psh, I only have two. And not through lack of trying. I have a copy of 'The Answer Machine?' on permanent order from my local record store: apparently I'll get a copy when they press some more, or never, whichever comes sooner. It's easier to get hold of the Kevin Ridley albums. But they ain't really so good.

I've been having the same type of problem with my sister. She's 13 and I have no idea how to bridge the gap from Fall Out Boy and whatever is on the radio to something endlessly better. I made a mix of a whole bunch of ska bands, because that seems like the easiest to like out of my music, but I don't know if its even going to matter. She might just keep on going on listening to the radio and remain unphased by anything I give her.

I guess I there's no real way of knowing until I try.

Agreed. Although I reckon 'Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)' or 'Straight Outta Compton' would be better choices than 'Doggystyle'. Seriously, kids love that stuff. Alternatively, children should be given All Girl Summer Fun Band and Charlotte Hatherley (NOT Ash. Ash are fully shite, but Hatherley's solo stuff is girly pop perfection) albums in order to teach them about good pop.

Try The Walkmen, The Shins, We Have The Facts-era Death Cab, and Change-era Dismemberment Plan as starters.

DO NOT introduce her to Stereolab yet. I love 'em my own self, but that'll baffle the shit out of a 12 year old who listens to pop-punk.

Maybe, I was big into punk when I first heard them and like them, so I don't see how it could be the worst choice that could be made.

Then again she maybe looking for a something to challege her which is all smart kids want really. It does seem kind of condescending to say that she wouldn't get something just because she is twelve. (Granted the angstier stuff she won't get because she's not old enough to be angsty, but I wouldn't want to expose someone that young to that sort of thing anyway.)

Also some more suggetions...
the Breeders (Last Splash)
Superchunk (The production may turn her off)
Sunny Day Real Estate (Diary)

she's twelve. she is not a peer. it is not condescending to think that she would have a limited appreciation of music.

It is a bit. I liked the Velvet Underground when I was that age, and I've got a friend who was big on stuff like Boris and Southern Lord bands when he was a kid.

What does not destroy her will make her stronger (assuming it doesn't destroy her). Just think of this as Darwin taking his course. Woah! Think of Darwin singing along to Deerhoof!

It's true that due to her age she would not have the vast musical experience, but then again I know many people who are my same age and have no clue about music beyond what is playing on the radio. Limited appreciation of music is not limited to twelve year olds. I don't consider them peers. Not becasue of age, but because of knowledge level. I just think that people may be underselling what she would be willing to listen to.

Let's look at Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Don Caballero. They all make very beautiful music, but is there really an age where you go, "Oh, I get it now." Granted there are albums where their understanding is very specifically tied to life experiences, like Radiohead's "Ok Computer" is a soundtrack for cube life.

I'm surprised the Yeah yeah Yeahs haven't been brough up.

i never said it was limited to age, or anything like that. i said age was a factor, simply because she doesn't have the experience, like you said. you proved my point.

I think it was mentioned before, but "The Unicorns" might be a good band. Another possibility would be Ratatat. Since it does not have lyrics most anyone can "understand" them.

That's what I got out of it.

No. No I didn't.

I'm looking at Appreciation and Understanding as two different things.

I said that I didn't think that she would understand "Ok Computer" since she has never worked in a cube farm. I didn't understand it until I worked in a cube farm. I appreciated the album before I understood it. The strangled desperation of the album is evident, but I never had a connection with it before I entered the cube world.

Moving off this subject...

A cube farm being... an office with cubicles? This is just a guess. I don't think what you say is true, given that I don't think any of the members of Radiohead have ever worked in a 'cube farm', and I think they probably understand that album better than anyone.

My sugestion is to introduce her to classic rock; stuff like the Beatles, the Clash, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead ect.  Throw a couple of the more influencial indie, punk, and whatever else you think she should be introduced to in the mix.  Then let her pick her musical taste from there.

That's a really good idea. I'm not much a fan of those bands myself but they'd make a great start for moving on, with intelligence, to wherever she herself wanted to go with her musical taste.
