The 'Must Have' List
Merkava:
Yeah, I wouldn't say they were indie either. They were too popular. ;D
sp2:
--- Quote from: pintsizeshomie ---Pink floyd is awesome, but i wouldnt call them indie. they also came out with some good stuff after Roger Waters left.
--- End quote ---
Their early stuff is pretty much identical to a lot of current indie stuff. They became epic psychadelic only with Meddle.
Also, every Pink Floyd album after The Wall pretty much sucked. Whether the Wall sucked is debatable, but I'd have to argue that it probably did.
Their best album was Animals, hands down.
But, back to indie essentials...
a pack of wolves:
--- Quote from: happybirthdaygelatin ---Meh, listen to VU and never saw what the big deal was. Now Mission to Burma I'd say is more essential listening then anything to do with ol' cadaver Lou.
--- End quote ---
I'd say they're pretty essential listening given their influence, whether or not you actually like them. Personally I don't really rate Psychocandy, but it is something of an indie classic and a very influential record, so I thought I'd include it as a recommendation.
But for something I do love, let's delve a little into the side of hardcore that was most influential on indie rock:
Fugazi - Red Medicine
Shellac - At Action Park
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
Revenge_Therapist:
Here's what I recommend. Pick up as many label samplers and odd compliations you can find. You'll find cool bands that way. Don't worry about genere and some wil indeed suck, but at least then you found it all on your own. Either that or listen to apackofwolves.
La Creme:
A bit of a change-up:
Eels - Electro-shock Blues
Radiohead - O.K. Computer (not indy, just amazing)
The Sugarplastic - Bang, The Earth Is Round
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
Ambulance Ltd. - Ambualnce Ltd.
Spoon - Telephono (extremely rare, but it's the first album of it's type of brash, staticy post rock that a helluva lotta bands have started ripping off)
Pinback - Blue Screen Life
The Violent Femmes - The Violent Femmes
Many more... but these are all terrific.
