MacNN: Spotlight to replace Finder

I just read this ""article"" and all I have to say is <Voice=Gilbert Godfrey>WTF!!!</voice>

http://www.macnn.com/articles/05/06/09/mac.finder.withering/
That one links this one:

This ones the real piece of jackassery.

Some jackass thinks Spotlight can replace Finder.
For those in the Windows world, thats like saying Google Desktop Search will eventually replace Explorer!

This might be ok for my wife's dad and his wife, but never will it be a good thing for those who do more than check eMail and surf the Intarweb!

spotlight replacing the finder might sound silly, but a move in that direction isn't too unlikely. organising files using metadata is pretty damn cool, and i think something like that could eventually replace the whole "folder" thing, which is more or less taken directly from physical filing systems. the whole digitisation of everything leaves room for new/different/experimental ways of organising and accessing files on your computer, and i think it sort of sucks that no-one's really pursued it in mainstream OSs.

I think the metadata thing is really cool, but I'd prefer to have both available.  Theres just times you need access to the direct filesystem, especially as a developer or SysAdmin.

It's not likely the Spotlight will all out replace the finder, but its quite likely that ppl may start using it more then the finder. The folder abstraction is one of the oldest and seemingly dated now that metadata search can be almost instantaneous.

agreed. a sort of blend/hybrid thing would be a good idea, even if just for the sake that people are used to the whole folder analogy.
