I'm not sure if I have ever mentioned this...
« on: 21 Aug 2005, 08:22 »

... but I need to get it out of the way. I'm going to ramble a bit, to establish where I am coming from, but my main point is at the end.

I am generally pretty tolerant of other people's musical preferences. There are some bands that I really cannot fucking stand, but I undetand why other people would like them. I may strongly distrust your opinions on music and think you have very little knowledge of what actually makes good, interesting music (usually this is for the Hot Topic/MTV2/Warped Tour sad sack screamy stuff), but I do not begrudge you your choices.

I have the right to say something is awful, but there are very few bands I think are devoid of talent enough to warrant a serious suspicion of someone's intelligence for liking. If you like FATA, Hawthorne Heights, Creed, Britney Spears, Taking Back Sunday, Linkin Park, whatever... I don't care. I think it all sucks, but I can see why someone would listen to it. There are a few (Slipknot, Master P) though, that I feel there is something wrong with you if you like them.

Being the classic mixtaper that I am, I hope that people into those bands are very early in their musical journeys. When I was young, I liked some stuff that is vastly far removed from anything I would consider good now. Here, I'll admit to a few things- In middle school, I liked Garth Brooks. I liked Creed's first album when I was like 16. I was into Dave Matthews first couple of albums. More recently, I even had a fling with Taking Back Sunday's first album (although that was a really brief). I still sort of appreciate the kitsch of Danish techno-pop group Aqua.

But I kept an open mind, figured out some stuff that was actually good, my tastes matured, and I outgrew those bands, and plenty of others have been left in the dust. I got more into older music, and found different avenues of learning about newer bands. I hope people with what I consider crappy taste can grow up and do the same, but even if they do not, I am sure they are fine people, and would have no problem being their friend if we had something else to talk about. I know a LOT of the stuff I listen to is not very accessible, and despite large fanbases, most people will never like Sufjan Stevens, or The Blood Brothers, or Youth Of Today, or The Stooges, or David Allan Coe.

So my point of all this rambling was to hopefully establish that I am not trying to ride highhorse here, and I don't want to be pretentious, and though I will critique music, it is not in my nature to judge PEOPLE.

Now, on to what I REALLY want to say...

If you do not like Johnny Cash, there is a good chance I want nothing to do with you. You don't have to love him, you don't have to be very familiar with his work. I get annoyed when all people can talk about is his cover of NIN or Depeche Mode (moreso when they claim to really like Johnny Cash but that's all they know), but even if that's all you've heard and you like it, or you're just like "yeah, I think Johnny Cash is OK," then that's good enough.

But if you actually dislike Johnny Cash's voice, music, writing, etc, if you say you hate country music and then lump him in with the rest of it, if you cannot appreciate Johnny Cash even casually, then I do not want to talk to you, and I'm not sure I trust you as a human being.

Fuck YES and fries. I was at my local Tower Records, I noticed they were playing Johnny Cash on the speakers, instead of the usual German house music that I throw into the background. When I walked through the store, everyone was whistling along. EVERYONE. Every single person I passed was whistling.

He is timeless, man. Timeless.

Yeah. Holler at ya boy
Holler at your boy. Do shit
Do remember, Holler at your boy
Go back, a few weeks on this one. Go way way back
This life aint for everyone,
But for some of us. Yeah. Life is easy
This song right here, going out a childhood mentor of mine, father John.
Holler.
Touched me as a kid, i want you to know, still feeling you.
Life is easy
Jah didn't kill Johnny
He had a date with death
It was a slow train coming
And we've all got a train to catch
But Lord, take your filthy claws off the rest of my friends.
That is, of course, if they ain't already dead.
I make no demands. I just make amends.
I make my bed and I'm a lie in it
But before I die...please...don't take anymore of my friends.
Please don't take anymore of my friends. Life is easy.
The smoke didn't kill Johnny. The drink didn't kill Johnny.
The junk didn't kill Johnny. And the women didn't kill Johnny.
Was it the road? I don't know. Was it rock and roll? I don't think so.
But God, God, God, God, God...would never...kill...Johnny Cash
He had a train to catch.
He had a date with death
And we've all got a train to catch.
Life is easy. Holler at ya boy. Life is easy.

You began a search
I know many have tried
Not a blind man among you
For years let fate decide
So swallowed and followed and played through start to end
With the good weight all carried by your faithful friend

She wrote you a song and you bought a wedding dress
Having handsome bite buxom
Have insured people met
Then sundry and nocturnal
You lay your peace to sleep
With your new loves good fortunes
And secrets safe to keep

What will await you
Can tether no more
What's shrunken withers
In the path to your door

Almost without fail, the first thing I do when I pick up an acoustic guitar is strum the opening riff of Folsom Prison Blues.

I think that says it all.

And if you don't like old Johnny, well.

I don't usually listen to much in that area of music, but Johnny Cash is amazing. I'm not familiar with all of his music though, just what my parents own :)

He is great though. Even if you don't enjoy his music you should at least see how talented he is. He has a great voice, and he writes amazing songs.

I actually haven't heard those covers.

I don't listen to a lot of cash, but I know I should. I love his image, and all the lyrics (and most of the music) of the songs I've heard.

Also, I always like to think of my guitar as something he'd play...

Well I’ll tell you on thing that I know
You don’t face your demons down
You got to grab em jack
And pin em to the ground

The Devil may care, and maybe God he won’t
Better make sure you check on the Do’s and the Don’ts

Crawl up the Mountain
To reach where the Eagles fly
Sure you can glimpse from the mountaintop
Where the soul of the muse might rise.

And if you put it all together
You wont have to look around
You know you cast
A Long Shadow On the Ground

Then one day I could tell my tracks
By the holes in the soles of my shoes
And that the day I said
I’m gonna make the news

And falling in the garden
Of days so long ago
Somewhere in the memory
The sun shines on you boy

Playing in the Arroyos
Where the American rivers flow
>From the Appalachians
Down to the Delta Roads

A man can’t think so long
His brain could well explode
There’s trains running thru the junctions
A King comes down the road

And if you put it all together
You won’t have to look around
You know you cast
A Long Shadow On the Ground

Listen to the Country- The Night Jar and the Bell
Listen to the Night Streamliner
Sounding like the wolves of Hell
Head for the water- the water of the cleansing spell
It was always are destination
On the express of the Ne’er Do Wells
And we rock thru Madison City
And we didn’t even know she was there
And when we hit the Buffers in Memphis
And Beale street didn’t have no prayer
I hear punks talk of anarchy- I hear hobos on the railroad
I hear mutterings on the chain-gangs
It was those men who built the roads

And if you put it all together
You didn’t even once relent
You cast a Long Shadow
And that is your testament

Somewhere in my soul, there’s always Rock and Roll

The song Joe Strummer wrote about Johnny Cash shortly before both of them died. There are tears in my eyes just from reading the first line. Please PLEASE go listen to this song if you like either one of these artists at all.

That first close veered close to lockage, you did come across as judgemental, though that may not have been your intent. Remember, music is subjective.  That said, if this thread stays on topic (Johnny Cash) then it's okay.  I remember where I was when I heard he died. Westbound for Albany, New York, on I-90, heading out to see friends.  It was a sad night.

The great thing about him is that no matter what genre someone's into, he most likely likes Johnny Cash. That sort of universal appeal is just awe-inspiring.

I think his style is too straightforward for their to be anything to dislike. The simpler and more sparse music is, the better it can act as a conduit for true emotion, in my mind. Some of Dylans earlier stuff is almost the angriest music I have ever heard. Cash is so universally liked not because he was a great musician, but because he was a great person.

hard to go wrong with "Live at Folsom Prison" or"live At San Quentin"

Folsom has a better song selection, but San Quentin has a slightly better performance. I'd go with Folsom.

The new "Legend" box set is the best compilation I've ever seen- and it's 4 discs for the price of two!.

Other good JC albums...

Songs Of Our Soil
Bitter Tears
True Ballads of The Old West
any of the American Recordings
"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" (which you can only get on LP, so good luck, the CD from 1995 isn't the same album, it's a compilation)

really, almost any of his proper albums is gonna have a lot of good songs, including a few that you won't find on many compilations. I'm not real big on "greatest hits" packages, but I understand the appeal for someone with SO MANY great songs.

Although I don't think people will be denying it later, I do agree that he gets a lot of lipservice these days. It really fucking annoys me when "hurt" is someone knows of him, yet they act like he is one of their favorites. But I've learned to try to steer the conversation towards his 1970 single "What is Truth."

Best three lines ever.

Also 'The Mercy Seat' is arguably the only overtly Christian song that I really express a liking for.
