Edit: Bloody hell, that was moved quickly!

Feeling rather happy with myself after acquiring two tickets to see Weezer play in Edinburgh on the 26th of Aug, and looking to book tickets to see The Foo Fighters in Glasgow when they become available on Friday.

So just a thread about what concerts you have been to. Which ones were especially good, and which ones were pretty damn poor.

I've been to some great concerts over the years. I've seen Eric Clapton live, and whilst he didn't exactly light up the stage with his personality, the music was flawless. I've also seen David Gray live which was again quite flawless, though I was more taken with the support band Turin Breaks, who I saw at a smaller venue a few months later.

I've also seen the Bootleg Beatles, which as well as being a great concert, was also great in that I got the tickets for free from the one who played George, all for serving him "the best gin and tonics he had ever had in his life"

The worst one I have seen had to be Badly Drawn Boy. All he did was swear and drink guiness, not even bothering to finish a few of his songs as he was too cool for that. Tosser. That and there was some little shit at the back throwing drink over people (why is that somehow an  accepted thing to do at a concert???). If I had caught him I would have beaten him to death with his own shoes.

The last concert I went to see though was a few months back when I was living in London. My friend called me and said he had two tickets to see Kylie and would i like to go. I tohught why not, and while it's not something I would have normally thought of seeing it was good fun. Even though my friend and I were the only straight men there! My friend (an aspiring male model) was getting a few looks his way..... :D

The Pixies last year at Brixton were a bit great, especially seeing as I didn't have a ticket but managed to buy one outside for face value while everyone else was getting ripped off by touts. Go me.

Le Tigre, Biffy Clyro, Gang of Four and stellastarr* I would also count as brilliant gigs I've seen.

Worst one would be PJ Harvey, who although has decent stage presence, was incredibly dull. That may have had a lot to do with the crowd being shit but what the hell.

Still, good gigs coming up soon, !!! tonight, Hot Snakes on Thursday then Yo La Tengo and Boy Least Likely To next week.

VCR at the black cat in DC was pretty good. The band sufficiently rocked faces off, but the venue was small and the crowd was smaller, so there were only a few people dancing. Ted Leo put on a great show, too, but the crowd there were even bigger assheads and decided to stand there. Hey, thick-frame wearing, tight-pants-and-tshirt hipsters, get up and dance at a concert. You're not impressing anyone with your Mount Eerie shirt.

I forgot to add that I have also seen The Strokes live a few years ago at a concert in Glasgow Green. Again I managed to get in for free after smooth talking my way past the ticket booth by telling them I was a music reporter for the Evening Times (local paper). All I had was a name, yet I still blagged it. ;) No thanks to my drunken friend though was was barely managing to retain consciousness

Some of the best concerts I've seen were really cheap in tiny venues.  I saw Mars Volta right after Deloused came out, and that was one hell of an awesome show.  Constantines this summer in a tiny 150 person venue, which was by far one of the most intimate and rocking shows I've seen (though some of the openers sucked and the audience was pretty fucking lame).

The lamest shows I've seen have always been arena concerts; they're expensive and there's nothing intimate about them.  Saw the Pixies this year, and that was incredibly disappointing, for example.

I've got tickets already to some cool shows this fall; Pretty Girls Make Graves and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.  I'm planning on picking up tickets to the Epoxies, and a friend of mine is trying to convince me to go see KMFDM with him....KMFDM is kinda shitty, but the opportunity to rivet up and mosh the shit out of everyone else is pretty appealing.

best concert I've seen was Apocalyptica and Rammstein. No question. Apocalyptica were an utterly killer opener. They bought along their drummer, which gave a kick to their old songs, and just rocked out harder than it should be possible for cellists to rock out. Plus, to close, they got everyone clapping along faster and faster to what became an almost impossibly fast rendition of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King ('Ze oviginal black metaal masterpiece' according to the one they let have the mic).

Rammstein had an awesome set hidden behind Apocalyptica's back screen. Having heard of Rammstein's extravagant stage-shows, I was kinda dissapointed when they walked on through a door in the middle (apart from the drummer, who came up by elevator) and just started playing Reise Reise. I was all 'Yes, cool and all, but where's the awesome dammit'. And then they finished Reise Reise. At that exact moment all the lights went off, the drummers drumsticks exploded and random part of the set started shooting forty foot blasts of flame. Then Till started clapping and chanting "EINS ZWEI EINS ZWEI EINS ZWEI DREI!"

And the rest is history. I think the show reached live Nirvana either when the keyboard player caught fire, or when, during Seemann (Sailor) the bassist took off his trousers, revealing a pair of speedos underneath, then clambered into a rubber dinghy which the roadies (who were all dressed as Micheal Douglas from Falling Down) threw into the crowd and he then proceeded to ROW ACROSS THE CROWD.

As for awful concerts, Hell is For Heroes, We Will be Pilots and some opening band that was far superior to both. Shite local venue. Ye gods that was dire. The only thing that made it any good was bringing my gas mask, boots and gloves and unsuitably moshing like a crazy industrial robo-man.

Constantines

Yes. I saw these guys with the Weakerthans and local band Sylvie (who're apparently picking up a lot of buzz, as their guitarist is Despistado's former bassist), and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. The Constantines are crazy fun, and The Weakerthans can instill this sense of euphoria over their audience like no band I've ever seen.

The worst concert I've ever seen that wasn't shat locals was the Taste Of Chaos tour. The underground emo bands were shit, and Killswitch pretty much wrecked the whole thing for me. I can't stand metalcore anyway, and secondly they just seemed out of place.

I've seen some great gigs in the last year, since moving down to Melbourne (live music capital of Australia!).  I think the best one was seeing Darren Hanlon supported by Jens Lekman - so good I went back again the next night.  Also, going to a local bar every week for a month to see a band called Vulgargrad, and watching as the audience just grew and grew and grew week by week, was amazing - by the end of the month they were in residence, you could hardly get in the door because the place was packed to the gills with people going wild to crazy Russian music.

Also, in my wallet right now I have tickets for Architecture in Helsinki on Friday and the Mountain Goats in September.

I've been to quite a few shows...way to many to list. So i'll just rattle off the top five shows i've seen.

1- Against Me! this past may. blew me away with the energy they had.
2- Bright Eyes a couple years ago. wasnt really a big fan, but they gave me goosebumps.
3- Bruce Springsteen this past april. I dont remember blinking the entire show hah.
4-Atmosphere at warped tour two years ago.
5- Is a tie between every 30footfall Show i've ever been to, and every time i've seen astronautalis rap. both are just amazing. Astronautalis probably should be higher on this list.

The only band I was e ver really let down by was alkaline trio. They where just so meh.

Since summers start:

The Bad Plus, which may be the greatest concert I've ever been to. I was right next to the drummer. Who is a mother fucking genius. Ok, they all are. If they come to your town, see them. I'm really serious. Even if you've never heard of them. They play a fucking amazing show.

Spoon. Classy, loud, very crowd pleasing, and in a friggin' awesome club. Plus they played Jonathan Fisk all fast and shit and it rocked like fuck.

Eels w/ Strings. After having seen the first show on the tour, I decided "Fuck it, I'll see the last too." And by golly dang gosh was it worth it. Over 2 and a half hours long, with 3 encores, the last one involving a 15 minute jam on "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues". It also firmly established the Eel known as The Chet as one of my favorite people in the universe.

So far, summer shows are good.

I've only ever been to one concert. :(

It was Velvet Revolver, went in January... was absolutely amazing. My friend said it's the best gig he's been to and he's been to quite a few.

I'm going to see Ocean Colour Scene on Saturday, which I'm really looking forward to... they're the first band I ever really liked, like said 'this is my favourite band' about, so they kind of epitomise the start of my interest in music... plus a lot fo their songs now have links to particularly dramatic times in my life so I'm no doubt going to end up crying about something.

I've been to lots and lots and lots of stuff. all over the place.

and yet I missed the organ playing at my intimate, local hometown venue the other night, when I was doing nothing else but playing on a trampoline and eating salad. what a fucking loser.

seriously, I couldnt believe I forgot when I realised, too late. I was pretty excited about it, too. gggaahhh!

on the plus side though, I learned to do backflips on the trampline, and damn, are they fun.

First of all, Avril, and her followers, tend to be hot as hell.

Second, fuck you. I Like Avril Lavigne. She is not a particularly talented musician, but she has a good, albeit overproduced, voice. Her songs are catchy, and while they might not have the depth or intensity, or even actual musical talent of an actual good band, doesn't mean I can't go see her with a free ticket.

In fact sp, you've never mentioned your music taste. Or maybe you have and I've just been too uninterested in your bullshit trolling to care. Please, tell us, so we can make fun of you for once.

Only some indie.  Also some punk in various punk subgenres (hardcore, post-punk, post-hardcore, etc), and some industrial.

But back to subject.

There is no excuse for liking Avril.  None.  I'll say this again.  N.O.N.E.

Avril is Britney Spears in Hot Topic duds.  If she wasn't hot (and really, I hate to say it, she's really NOT hot), no one would even pay her attention.  Hell, you even admitted that her music isn't even trying to be decent, but is rather an avenue for her to pimp her body out.  Even being "attractive" (hint: it's all makeup), the only people who take her seriously are 13 year old (and younger) girls who think that wearing heavy black eyeliner and wearing a studded belt makes you a "rebel."  I'm in my early 20s.  Girls half my age just don't interest me enough to make me suffer through 2 hours of shitty music.  I'd rather go to a show where I'm going to meet REAL punk chicks.  You know, the kind who will break your balls in the moshpit.

And just because it's free doesn't mean you have to see it.  I see bands for free all the time at local bars.  And normally, they suck, but I've definitely seen a lot of good bands for free at local bars.  The Swayback, Tin Tin, Matson Jones....I've seen all these guys live, for free, in tiny little venues, hell, I've gotten to chat with some of these bands after the shows even.  And it's good music (I love the shit out of Swayback.  I don't care if they're local or not.  They are awesome) and a good scene.

Plus, the beer's cheaper.

I don't disagree with you man. I'm not defending her as a musician, or saying I subscribe to her scene at all. I do however, enjoy her songs and her voice, and will sing along if I hear them on the radio. I'll be going trashed out of my mind anyway, so the price of beer isn't an issue.
It's a fun thing, with fun easy music. It doesn't always have to be hard work.

That's the difference between you and me.  I can't stand her.  I find her music to be an insult and a cunning attempt to (further) commercialize off a medium that I enjoy and, in some cases, is actually still honest (punk in general has been raped by marketing campaigns, but that's another story entirely).  This feel-good, safe, clean, family-friendly image she cultivates is not good for the medium.  Punk is supposed to be about showing the brutal realities of society with equally brutal music and image.  Sanitizing it simply leads to a whole class of music that is a soulless expression of parent-approved rock and roll (Good Charlotte is another example of this shit).

You're not punk and I'm telling everyone
Save your breath, I never was one

I don't listen to the radio much anymore precisely because this sort of commercialized bullshit pisses me off, and I'm really trying to keep my blood pressure down before I give myself an aneurysm.  If I listen to the radio, it's the local college station, which prides itself on spinning only independant music and local bands.

For me, fun music is music that doesn't piss me off.  Right now, the fun music I've been listening to is Siobhan, which is pretty much a more talented Flogging Molly.  Welfare State is about as fun as albums get, and it's packed with songs to get shitfaced and pass out to.  I'm just pissed the band broke up (apparently they were drinking too much on tour and their livers are now fucked).  THAT makes a band enjoyable to me, not some ad campaign and radio glitz.

Now the bank has come to call
To repossess it all
And I can’t fuckin' wait
'Cause I was born to be a homeless man
In the modern welfare state

Yes. Yes, I can only agree.

Apart from that: Seeing North of America twice and both times, they kicked ass despite the fact that half of their equipment and all of their personal stuff had vanished in a van fire a few days before the shows.
One of their shows was also the loudest show I've ever been to.

The Flying Luttenbachers also kicked an immense amount of ass, as did Berg Sans Nipple / Do Make Say Think. And Turbostaat, though that's mostly because the venue was so packed with people you just had an intense atmosphere anyway.

If you wanted that, just go to some local ska show, the tickets are cheaper so he would save some money. And there are lots of retarded 13 year old punk wannabes there just waiting to make out with people that are at least 5 years older than they are (if you're homeless and/or addicted to hard drugs, it's a bonus).
Did I mention that I hate the whole ska scene along with every fucking ska band?

I've been to an opera once outside... That's what you get for living in a small city in Oregon where a large number of residents are from California who come here to retire. Also, not having my own money to travel somewhere makes it tricky.

If I could go, I think I would want to see a Garbage and Franz Ferdinand concert.

Oh yeah, once I saw Natalie MacMaster, who's a fiddler with a friend... not really my cup of tea, but she enjoyed it and it was a free ticket.

My first ever gigs were a Genesis tribute concert and a Pink Floyd tribute concert (Think Floyd for the second one, can't remember who the Genesis guys were, but they were good).

The Pink Floyd one was just great. Especially because I was 14. But no, seriously. They had an awesome light show, and when they were doing 'In the Flesh' I was 'that one in the spotlight'.

The best concert I've ever been to is a toss up.
I saw Flogging Molly at Springfest this summer. They were really, really on, and besides that there was this energy in the air. It was like nothing could be wrong about that night. I was doused in guiness by the end of it, though.
But then there was the Plan-it-X Fest. Defiance, Ohio and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb (who I will mention every chance I get) have never, ever been bad when I saw them.

On the other end of the spectrum, I saw AFI and Thursday two years ago. I missed most of AFI, because I'd managed to get myself hurt by then, but Thursday... I know that Geoff had the flu that night, but the other day I was listening to their last CD and I though, "it would be cool to see them live. Oh, wait..."

Are the Foo Fighters good live? I'm this close to buying a ticket to Voodoo Fest because of them.

Best live show ever is the Aquabats. Hands down. Stage battles with "monsters", commercials for Aquabats products, an inflatable raft with two children in it being crowd-surfed during "Captain Hampton and the Midget Pirates", a guy in a wheelchair being crowd surfed and then getting up on stage, and sheer, unadulterated silliness. Also a cover of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. Even if you don't really like their music, you should still go see them live--I guarantee you will enjoy yourself.

The openers for the Aquabats at that particular concert were the Phenomonauts and the Epoxies. The Phenomonauts put on a good show--a sort of sci-fi rockabilly 50's thing, it was sweet. The Epoxies are awesome, and Roxy gets totally into it which is fun to watch (no, I'm not being perverted, although she IS hot--it's just cool to see someone really enjoy themselves).

The Dropkick Murphys also put on an excellent show--opening with "Cadence to Arms", guys in the crowd with huge-ass flags, and having a random fan come on stage to sing "Barroom Hero".

Social Distortion are excellent live as well. Mike Ness has probably the best between-song banter I've heard, and they absolutely fucking rock.

Also, I've seen the Blue Oyster Cult twice. They are undeniably badass. They're like 50 years old and they still rule.

I also saw Billy Idol on Warped Tour this year. Good show. Nothing real spectacular, but come on--it's BILLY FUCKING IDOL.

Also, possibly one of the better shows I've seen was seeing Primus at Red Rocks; one hell of a setlist (The entirety of Sailing the Seas of Cheese! ZOMG!) I got wonderful seats, and whatnot. The show itself was void of most of the antics that you'd expect, but it's fucking red Rocks. it's kinda hard to pull off the stuff like that, at least the two times I've been there have shown.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

For that price, yes. They play a good deal of their original stuff live: they played Harmageddon, Path, Beyond Time and Hyperventilation when I saw them, as well as Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets, both of which were far better live because a) the entire crowd was singing along b) they bring a drummer c) they do the solo on master of puppets live. They also played Hall of the Mountain King, which was just fucking insane, they're recorded version is very fast, but they went faster live. And they are actually pretty damn loud live, as their cellos all have contact mics and amps. If they're headlining, they'll probably play more stuff: I'd hold out for Apprehension and Pray!, and they'd probably do another Metallica cover as well, as regrettably 95% of the people who've heard of them don't actually know about their original material.

But it's worth going just to watch people moshing to a string quartet playing Hall of the Mountain King.
