Most of the people who listen to black metal, and even some who play it, don't take it that seriously. The corpse paint is just a theatrical image thing to most anyway. Of course not to all, and my typical metalhead perspective would be despised by trOO kvlt necro kiddies.

These of course, being the same tr00 kvlt nekrokiddies who claim to be extreme, anti-human death-soldiers of Satan, or whatever the latest craze is nowadays, yet can't go to gigs because they have school in the morning.
They also tend to have views on the purity and seriousness of black metal directly contrary to the stated opinions of Cronos, Quorthon, Vark Vikernes, Fenriz and just about every other person of any note or intelligence actually associated with proper black metal in any way.

Anyways, about corpse paint.. To me putting on corpse paint is like a ritual. I've never played a live show in it, unfortunately, but I've put it on for photos with previous bands I've been involved in. It's like becoming another person, wearing a mask, becoming less human, alienating yourself from the "normal." It's a physical reflection of parts of one's personality coming out to become dominant during the show/photoshoot.
Of course, it does look cool when done properly. . However you have fucking idiots out there who do stuff like this:

Here's a local heavy metal band that sings entirely in Klingon. I once saw them play while I was a bit tipsy, and started yelling things about Romuluns kicking the asses of klingons. Glad the lead vocalist (the big guy in the middle) didn't hear me. He may be missing half an arm, but I still wouldn't want to mess with him.
