Local awesomeness goes national

KharBevNor:
To be fair, to be fair, you can occasionally produce a band that puts out a few decent solid albums. Then they get their own line of shoes.

Kai:
Damned fine shoes though.

There's really only one local band that I'm really caring about here in Kansas (although DeVotchKa are ace; Why are they touring everywhere else in the midwest?) and that would be the Three Businessmen. Basically, it's these three 40 year old guys who work at a record shop here (one owns it) and make songs about Hunter S. Thompson wishing he shot himself in the foot and Mobsters and rapists and people cutting off their foot with lawnmowers. It's amazing.

Everest:
Well, what's national in little ol' Belgium here is merely local in the States. Over here, you're making it if you can afford a van to transport your crappy punkrock band to the next big town over, to be the support for the crappy punkrock band that did the same before you. And there's a genuine chance the headlining band's drummer is your bass player's big brother. Needless to say, no one really cares more than they have to by bloodline.

Then there's your occasional surprise, that makes it big times in what seems less than a finger snap. K's Choice, Hooverphonic, Soulwax/2 Many DJ's, to name a few... But those are just exceptionally good bands that made it outside of the plebs's sight. We don't have anything in between, just real crappy or real good. But if I have to hype one band that most surely deserves an international career, it's http://www.fiftyfootcombo.com. Pure awesomeness, they are.

Kai: heh... Those Three Businessmen guys sound exactly like the kind of band Rob and guys from High Fidelity would have, if they were 40. That definitely sparked my interest! Site? I suppose I could look it up, but the laziness bug bit me. Like, when I was born. And yay for human interaction!

happybirthdaygelatin:
DeVotchKa sounds familar.  Punk?

sp2:
Well, there's DeVotchKa and then there's The Devotchkas.  DeVotchKa is a denver avant rock band with a lot of easern european influence.  I think the Devotchkas were a shitty riot grrl band, but not certain, cause I've never heard of them.

But yeah DeVotchKa are awesome.  Both Una Volta and How It Ends are completely killer albums.
