most overrated bands.

sp2:
Interpol
The Arcade Fire

Also, your mom.

SpacemanSpiff:
Interpol, definitely. They're not innovative, they're boring.
I have yet to motivate myself to listen to The Arcade Fire, every time I'm almost there I read a description of their music and think "Oh God, no" and then I listen to something else instead.
White Stripes
Mando Diao
The Hives

And mentioning Slint in here should be punishable by death by explosive hemorrhoids.

sp2:
The problem with Arcade Fire is that people ritually confuse what they are and what they aren't.

They are good at writing catchy pop indie rock.

They are good at putting on a live show.

They are NOT the saviors of rock and roll.

They are not incapable of writing a bad song (their EP was a whole ballsload of bad songs back to back to back).

Win Butler is not Jesus.

Johnny C:
This thread is one hundred percent unneccessary. I mean, if it maybe discussed music press' role in overrating bands, or why bands get overrated or something, then I could see it having a purpose. As it is, it's just "hurr I don't like [band] as much as other people do."

JLM:
and obviously our opinions aren't nearly as important as those of the music press.

There is validity in this thread, although I agree that there needs to be more discussion about why a band is overrated as opposed to just a laundry list of bands we think are overrated.

Therefore:

The Arcade Fire: A friend of mine recommended Funeral to me before the indie press started their fapping circle jerk bukkake all over Win Butler's face, and I still didn't see the appeal.  I mean, the album is okay, but on the whole it's not like they really did anything spectacular, and there are a number of tracks that they could've done without, particularly "Haiti" and "In The Backseat" (Basically, I don't think Regine should be allowed to do lead vocals.  It's the sybillant S.  really bothers me).

Slint: I'm basing this completely on Spiderland.  For a six song album, I just wasn't really that impressed.  It felt more like hardcore than anything else.  While the movement that they spawned created some excellent music, it doesn't necessarily follow that the progenitors produced the same level of quality.  They did provide a new way of thinking, and for that they deserve credit, but with so many better bands following the math-rock (shudder at the term) or post-rock (bigger shudder) formula I think Slint, with their whispered, pretentious storytelling followed by loud, heavy segments, isn't really worth exploring except as an interesting footnote to a bigger, better musical movement.
