1.  I think it's disrespectful to call someone's dislike of a band "backlash".  It assumes that they dislike the band only because they're too popular, not because they really don't like the band.  You can disagree with someone, but don't diss how the opinions come about.

2.  It's strangely cynical to assume that anyone who comes up with a vaguely contentious thread and has a low post count is a troll.  I'm not going to say it's disrespectful, because it's reasonable, but I think it's strange how message boards have evolved so that it would be reasonable for me to be a troll.

3. It's so true that Radiohead hasn't influenced anyone of note yet!  I hadn't thought of that, but it's true.  I mean, Coldplay?  Muse?  WTF?  Give them time, though, and I'm sure they will.

Things that eventually happen in ANY thread in the Music Talk forum:

1. Someone mentions Radiohead, in any context whatsoever.
2. Someone whose name starts with Khar points out that Radiohead is stupid and overrated and oh by the way they're boring and they really suck.
3. sp2 points out, with no provocation whatsoever, that Coldplay is really terrible.
4. Someone defends Radiohead, thereby precluding the possibility of any other topic being discussed until a mod closes the thread.
5. Did sp2 mention that Interpol is also really terrible? Oh, and boring too.
6. Someone says, in effect, "Yeah, well, that's just your opinion, man."
7. Someone points that anyone's opinion is valid as long as it's not presented as fact.
8. Absolutely everyone ignores (7) and continues to present opinions about Radiohead as fact, adding in personal insults and extreme hyperbole to spice things up a bit.
9. sp2 points out that your mom. Your mom what? the thread is momentarily diverted from the descent into Radiohead flame war to ponder. But whatever doubtless fascinating information sp2 has to impart about your mom is left a mystery, and perhaps it's better that way.
10. A mod closes the thread, citing irreconcilable differences, and by differences I mean uselessness.

1) I first mentioned Radiohead in this thread, rather politely.
2)It must have been four months or so since I mentioned Radiohead in any context whatsoever.

Khar has actually been damn fantastic in the last little while about not actually insulting people's tastes in music. Other people have ventured in to fill that void for him.

Anyways, I think if you don't like the music that you don't have to call it "boring." Just "I don't like it."

Ah, but one's own musical taste is insulted relatively regularly.

I only generally insult musical taste when either they insult mine, they are rude to me in some other way, or I'm in a monumentally bad mood. This last factor may occur more frequently during term time. I'll try and take it out mainly on last.fm, far more idiots there anyway.
