Shake it up!
« on: 08 Sep 2007, 00:31 »

I've been listenning to almost nothing but low key stuff. Really good stuff that I'm enjoying a lot, but it's all either down tempo or quiet or otherwise un-exciting. I need some music that shakes things up and freaks out and goes crazy. Early Modest Mouse got like that on occasion.
I just need some music that's no good to fall asleep to. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Please note: I don't like metal. At all.

If you don't like metal at all, then you're not trying hard enough.

I recommend you listen to Judas Priest and Mercyful Fate. For a week.

that's the best description of deerhoof... ever
FLAMING LIPS man, all the way, like maybe clouds taste metallic or transmissions from the satelite heart. Wolf parade, apologies to the queen mary, i can't sleep listenin to that. And what about Dinosaur Jr., perhaps not up beat, but certainly crazy insane pump up music, I don't like grunge but i love the dinos, go for living all over me. You probably have all that allready, fairly standard stuff, but if not, enjoy.

Urge to recommend ska, rising... RISING!

Okeay, I'll hold back.

Hot Hot Heat, Louis XIV, OK Go, We Are Scientists, Wolfmother, and the Fratellis are good.

But if you have the sudden inclination to turn on Reel Big Fish, Big D and the Kid's Table, and their ilk, more power to ya! (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)

Even having already posted in this thread when I came back into the music forum just now I thought at first that the title was 'Shark it up!'

I think that would probably be a much better thread.

I actually used to fall asleep to the Foo Fighters when my friend played it at night.
I would recommend some Pixies, but I love the Pixies, so let me recommend something else.
Les Savy Fav (In French I believe they are called "The Fuck You".). There new album was put up in the sendspace thread, so you already have easy access to some material. Try them out, it's worth it.
Depending on what you mean by 'freakout' music, you could always listen to Japanese noise post-punk band Melt Banana.
I also second Brainiac, Deerhoof and Funhouse (By the Stooges.).

Alright, if you don't like metal, but want some high energy music I'll recommend the following artists:

a.  The Pogues;
b.  Stevie Ray Vaughan; and
c.  Howling Wolf.

'course, my definition may be different from yours...

It WAS put up, but it was a YSI that expired and nobody re upped it and Griffin was sad.

someone get me the new LSV.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I'm listening to a little Brainiac and I like it. But I feel like there's something out there that's just what I want and I haven't found it yet.
I want something loud and fast. Like metal, except not awful.

Maybe even something like At the Drive-In. I don't know.

That's kind of a silly comment.

Anyhow, try some of these:
Nation Of Ulysses
Fugazi
Be Your Own Pet
Le Tigre (the first album)
The Blood Brothers
Q And Not U
Shellac
Sleater-Kinney

Also, Tommy, Johnny C, and MusicScribbles had excellent suggestions.

Honestly I'm just going to post in this thread as I think of it.

Essentially everything that has been seconded is correct. As for things which haven't been recommended, I suggest Throw Rag right now

At the Drive-In is a good suggestion, although maybe too metalish? There's this band from Iceland called Apparat Organ Quartet, they might be something. Oh yeah, The Go! Team, you have to check them out, specially a track called Bottle Rocket.

Yeah seriously, I've never heard that before. Oh and why is the abbreviation LSV instead of LSF?
I would definitely try them. They are my favorite band these days.

Nation Of Ulysses
Fugazi
Be Your Own Pet
Le Tigre (the first album)
The Blood Brothers
Q And Not U
Shellac
Sleater-Kinney
Seconded, all of them. You may really like Failure. My two favorite songs by them are Empty Friend and Stuck on You.

Seriously, what are you thinking of when you say 'metal'? The amount of good metal bands getting radio play right now can be counted on the fingers of one tomato.

Try:
Danzig - Lucifuge
Ewigkeit - Conspiritus
Judas Priest - British Steel
Orange Goblin - The Big Black
Skyclad - Folkemon

If none of those get you going at all you should probably just throw yourself off a bridge.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Sorry, I just don't like metal. I feel I've given it a chance, having listened to Mastadon's Blood Mountain and Dio's Holy Diver all the way through without for a moment enjoying it. I'm currently listening to Mercyful Fate, as someone suggested, and hating every second. I just don't like metal. At all.

Try:

Gogol Bordello
Mutiny
And, seconding the Pogues.

Listening to these bands will pretty much force you to drink whiskey and dance around smashing stuff.

Or, maybe some funk?

James Brown
Parliment/Funkadelic
Bootsy
Maceo Parker
etc.

Or... um...Heavy drum and bass is kind of like metal, but made by robots. Robots armed with powerful sub-bass synths, intent on killing each other over a small patch of post apocalyptic wasteland. Try something like Evol Intent, Black Sun Empire or Noisia, but make sure you play it on a stereo with a sub the size of a small horse. Neigh.
