There's a lot of metal out there these days that, while it does have the base elements of the rock/metal outfit, they delve into different genres, in particular classical as its often done, but theres a lot of bands that Ive often thought can be enjoyed by a wide audience spectrum. Testing this, I showed a friend some Sonata Arctica. This guy is pop and homosexual as anything, but has classical training on piano. He absolutely loved it until I told him it was metal and he literally went off it right then.

What I want to ask some of you, what do you think of some of the more progressive power metal bands? Put aside some of the more cliche power metal anthems, bands like Sonata Arctica (check out album Silence, fantastic stuff), Stratovarius and this one that isn't as well known Pagan's Mind (www.pagansmind.com for mp3s), and to a lesser degree ('cause all their stuff is rehashed off their older stuff) Kamelot? A lot of other friends who are very much into music love them, so you're thoughts please.

As far as prog metal goes, Symphony X all the way. Their new album is due out soon, and I'm totally fucking jazzed.

Now personally I don't believe such a thing as progressive power metal exists, since power metal tends to be rather regressive :p
But meh, Sonata are great but to call them progressive is taking it a bit far, Stratovarius are good, but nowhere close to progressive.

Just taking a stab in the dark with some recommendations that fit in neatly with the bands listed as far as I know...Ayreon (esspecially the Flight of the Migrator and the Human Equation those two are insanely good), Stream of Passion, Apocalyptica(?)

Also, Symphony X rocks my socks off...

Haha! I forgot about Apocalytica! They really tie in with the whole borederline metal thing though, cheers!

I've only heard a few songs off the new Sonata Arctica albums, and I like how they've introduced the 7 string guitar. It really gives that sort of music the balls its needed for a long time to be really classed as metal in this day and age. Yeah, I agree its not really progressive, but a few people have said that kind of music is progressive in the past, but I guess its only because of some of the trasitions that occur. The exception goes to Pagan's Mind I still beleive, quite progressive in many aspects. If you haven't already, I seriously suggest a look.

A bit off topic, but this is where the people that may have heard of the band would be. I told this guy to take a listen to a few Dragonforce songs, in particular I said Starfire, as he usually likes ballad-type and other melodic songs. Well, he did and the thing that really got me angry, confused, and made me generally say "WHAT THE FUCK THE ABSOLUTE RETARD!" was that he thought it sounded emo. EMO. I'm not talking like old emocore stuff, like he actually similarised it to Simple Plan.

At the risk of sounging emo, I am still going to say, what is wrong with society!? We've become so afraid and angry with emos that theres now a state of mass emo-phobia! So what's the limit that a song writer can write an emotional song without being called an emo these days? Bear in mind that also after I told this guy Iced Earth were a good band, he looked at some of the lyrics and said they sounded emo. ARRRRR!!!!

I'm not quite sure what tack we're going for here, but I think I have it down enough to suggest that you seek out music by Wuthering Heights, Demons and Wizards, Dark Moor, Turisas, Ensiferum, Secret Sphere, Star One, late Therion, and possibly Wizard and Domine. A bit either side of what you're talking about, but it's a narrow gap (basically, power bands with keys, almost).

Of course, the obvious one to mention is Nightwish's early material, but I'll probably be shouted at. Nowt wrong with Angels Fall First though.

And of course, I'm pretty keen on this kinda stuff, though I always thought Sonata Arctica were terribly over-rated.

hmmm... not quite what I was getting at Khar, but then I guess I wasn't very well explained. Never mind. I do enjoy those bands you mentioned very much, however, good on ya! I didn't even think Sonata were rated very highly? I was under the impression they really just did support acts for bands usually? Ah well, thats what you get from coming from such a musically useless corner of the world, especially the most musically useless city of that corner.

i happen to live in that corner, and that city young tim....and i'd like to point out that you live under several rocks....they seem to keep the ones in your head company. there is plenty of local talent and talent from other states that kick the absolute shit out of a "band" like "sonata arctica". I cite Pathogen for example. the metal scene here in australia is not exactly huge, but we are not musically devoid as your ignorant supposition entails, nor would i say we are a musically ignorant corner of the world.

May I suggest you grab Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Beethoven's Last Nightalbum?
quite excellent opera rock/metal.

do you like folk metal? there's some heavy instrument experimentations in that.. I suggest the very obvious Finntroll

I'd like to point out Cruachan, too. Their song titled: To Invoke the Horned God is still among my favorites of all time, sadly the rest of their work is a bit lacking..

Oh come on, lacking? Ride On? Bloody Sunday? They have some good stuff. Though, I've got to say, the best celtic metal albums of all time is still probably Waylander - Reawakening Pride Once Lost. Brilliant stuff. You're mentioning pretty metal folk metal bands though. If we're talking borderline, shouldn't we be talking about stuff like:

Skyclad - Oui Avant-Garde a Chance/Skyclad - The Answer Machine?
Korpiklaani - Spirit of the Forest

...and that's all I can think of actually. Have you heard Finntroll's acoustic album? Incredible.

The Fucking Champs sound like a 16-bit Sega driving video game's soundtrack, played on three guitars, with some old school Metallica influences. No vocals, just instrumental and drums. They're unbelievable technically but maybe not the best songwriters.

Hahaha, thats a fiar coincidence. The same friend I told to download Starfire, amongst other songs, one of which was BG's Nightfall. I knew he might like it being one of their more melodic songs. And he did, but he didn't call it metal. I think he would've liked the upbeat nature of the song though, because he didn't like Bright Eyes, also being typically BG melodic type stuff. Ah well, some people....

metal to a lot of my friends is just that screaming that you can understand the words to... those are some of the best kind. some of my favs are A Dozen Furies and Devildriver. and i somewhat recently saw these bands open for GWAR, that was an awesome concert! anyone else fans of any of these bands?

Doesn't Virgin Black come from Adelaide? They're only the most original band in doom metal today, and one of the more original bands in the entire metal scene. They're one of the only bands I know of who uses real operatic male vocals as opposed to screechy power metal vocals.

Also Metallica's S&M is a sorry excuse for real neo-classical metal. I liked it back in the day when I hadn't ever heard bands that actually write songs with classical influences, but its really not that good on the scale of orchestral metal.

Ive heard Virgin Black, and they are VERY good for the sheer originality factor there. I don't know if they're from Adelaide though... Alchemist are good as well, but what gives me the shits about Australia is for every good band is like 50 other totally non-original bands that say "Hey, I reckon we could do that" and then sound like whatever is big in metal at the time, and not very good either. Pathogen Australian and are very good for what they are, give em a listen. www.pathogen.com.au.

I gotta say, I am not a metal head by any stretch of the imagination, but Alchemist and Dungeon are cream-worthy, although Dungeon are quite traditional power metal, not borderline at all.

Symphony X are something I've considered getting into as well. My friend played me some stuff once that blew my pants off, and they're a lot like Dream Theatre, except with a man singing.

That being said, I tend to cater more to the sludge/post/drone side of metal. Bands like Isis, Pelican, Sunn O))), Khanate, Jesu, Earth, Neurosis, etc. That's just me. It floats my boat.

I'll give you elitist: If you were to search through Metal Archives (if it were still to exist, woe) you would find/have found (oh, I hope it's back) a certain black metal band with two EP's and an album out, cassette and vinyl only, 666 releases, etc. These all had high 90 reviews out of 100, eulogising them to shit: looked like a sweet black metal band. Thing was, it was total bollocks. Me and my mates put it up about a year ago when we were bored. Although I've no way of finding out, I really hope at least someone has tried searching for them. I'll sell some early demo tapes sometime on ebay (tapes of static).
