Okay, so it's another one of those list threads, and I deserve a swift kick in the ass for it, I know, but here I go anyway. Here are the rules, which I bet will have been summarily ignored by at least the end of this page.
Imagine you have a band, or better yet, if you already have one, use them.
Name the top ten artists that you would make a compilation cd with, if you could. And let's limt it to no more than two deceased artists, I want to kep things contemporaryish*. Also, one per choice. Thi isn't a "best supergroup" thread, it's a "I wanna make kick ass music with [blank]" thread. Here are mine, in no particular order.
1. Ben Harper. My favorite slide player ever. Check out "Ground on Down" for some brilliant slide work.
2. Johnny Cash. The mn in Black had a talent for writing songs tht were just plain bad ass- and for all you who'll go off on him just cause hes country, I'm sorry, but I still think "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die" is harder than anything sayyyy... fifty cent or the guy from slayer ever thunk up.
3. Groove Armada- Besides being my ultimate favorite elctronic-type music group, their chill-out compiltion Back To Mine is something I can listen to ten times in a row without getting sick of it.
4. Brad Paisley. Yeah, more country. But this guy can play like crazy, plus he has this talent for making songs that sort of smirkingly mock tradition, without being too obvious. He's like Country's answer to indie.
5. Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel) His sngs have a fractured sort of brilliance to them. I would lve to hear what he could do with something I wrote.
6. Mike Patton. He's bloody insane. And I mean working class Faith No More Mike Patton, not pretentious Mr. Bungle Patton. Yeah, I just dissed Mr. Bungle. FNM were worlds better. Get over it.
7. Dimebag Darrel(l?) I still think he was the most innovative, gifted, balls out metal guitarist of the current crop.
8. John Frusciante (If the Peppers had only made Blood Sugar... and then quit forEVER) He was my favorite guitarist of all time, which just makes the peppers' last two travesties all the more heartbreaking. OR (and I know I'm reaking my own rul here, but there's a theme.) Johnny Greenwood, (If Radiohead had never made an album after OK Computer.)
Same reasons as above. They had, above all, brilliant guitar work in the first three. The new ones are good, but well, lots of people could have made them. It didn't need to be radiohead.
9. G. Love- my favorite of the current crop of laid-back, acoustic guitar style lads out there.
10. Brian May. He's Brian Bloody May. What else do you want?
*This is only cause I immediately thought of two dead ones I would still have to have. I originally wanted only live ones.
