I'm guessing they're only temporary. The artist uses the term "play piercing" so they probably just take them out and it heals.

Yup, it's a temporary thing, just to experience the adrenaline high of getting pierced. I couldn't do it, personally, but I always love seeing pictures.
There's a "play piercing zipper" thing too...
"Needles can be placed in fun decorative patterns. Another neat trick is to tie one long string connecting each needle and then -- for easy removal of the needles, just pull them all out at once via the string. This is called a zipper. I both really, really want to try that and really, really don't want to try that.

I'm working my way up to trying it. I used to be terrified beyond reason of needles (even just seeing one was enough to make me hyperventilate) but what really helped me get over that was watching play piercing sessions.
Of course, the people I watched had done it for years and she was a massive masochist who could take a few hundred needles at a time. It was pretty impressive to watch.
