I gave someone a tattoo today, it turned out really beautifully actually, I feel kind of more accomplished doing that than I have doing anything at art school all year. oops. It was pretty simple, just some leaves and branches, but it was extremely emotional, wonderfullsss

I learned today, that even though Tattoo expos are awesome and I love them, they are one massive cock tease if you have a tattoo you want but no money. I did however end up getting some fantastic 1"/25mm plugs.

what kind of wood are those?
I have a collection of pieces of exotic hardwoods that I bought for making christmas tree ornaments, tool handles and things like that, and I've been considering making plugs. They're not really a very complex shape to turn on a lathe, and it would be a fun project. I've got a few kinds of rosewood, some different ebonies, zebrawood, cocobolo, etc.

I'm thinking Olive Wood, but I am not 100%. I will be double checking today because I had intended to ask and completely forgot anyways. I am terrible with recognizing wood types unfortunately. The plugs are Osage! If you are curious at all the cut of this one is called Mayan Flare.

I'm not sure how knowledgeable you are about what woods are ok for jewelry wear at all, so no offense intended if you are already well versed, but this is a great resource to get the information if you don't already have it.

I'm assuming this 2nd link is something you won't need as much, but here it is.

ackblom12: Thats a great site! Thanks for the info! Unfortunately for me, most of the exotic hardwoods that I use for turning and small projects are on the list of woods best to avoid. I use those same woods for wooden spoons, bowls, trays and the like, but I heat mineral oil into the wood so its safe to use on food. Its really too bad that more or less the entire Dalbergia genus is out of bounds, because so many gorgeous hardwoods are in that genus.

Oh man so I have finally booked in to get my sleeves done. On the 26th of October I shall arrive at the tattoo studio in Melbourne at about 11am and stay there til 6pm. On the 28th of October I shall do that same thing again. This is going to be an interesting and painful holiday.

But I can do that because I am a girl and they don't mind if I weep silently.

I'm considering just bringing a few cards of codeine and my iPod. I don't know yet If I'll be able to last the whole day but I'm not really bony so I don't imagine it will be as bad as getting my shoulders done, it will just take forever.

Duuuuude, you are going to NEED that codeine. If nothing else you're gonna swell up like a mother fucker. How soon after the tattoos are you flying again? Pressure change will fuck with you as well.

I sat for seven and a half hours for one of my torso sittings and it was pretty miserable.  I drove home shirtless and with no seat belt.  I stayed shirtless, unshowered, and could only lay on my back for two days.   My whole chest and side just felt like they had been turned into hamburger.   I don't know anything about flying afterwards, but I've done lots of over three hour sessions in my life, and you're pretty sick of it before it's over.

Mine was only 4hours long and i still swelled up to gigantor size. My suggestion though is taking lots of Ibuprofen to help keep the swelling down.

We're driving down, yay no changes in pressure! I can't take ibuprofen because I essentially have stomach ulcers but I'm going to have to buy some codeine and take that down with me. Luckily I'm weak as shit when it comes to opiates so two codeine should keep me going for at least a few hours.

If you are considering taking the the codeine to your session, just make sure before hand if the artist is okay with it. Liability issues and all that since it is a drug that puts you in an altered state. They may also not be okay with the blood thinning aspect  of it but that seems like it would be much less of an issue all told.

I've been giving some simple tattoos lately, here is the first one I did. I did not do the leaves, it was just an extension on what he had. We're probably going to continue it down a bunch more. I feel pretty okay about it given that it's fully healed and wonderfully consistent line given the fact it was done with a sewing needle in an hour.

I've checked it out (and will confirm with my pharmacist) but codeine doesn't seem to have a significant blood thinning effect. Besides I would probably be getting an over the counter form of codeine so probably paracetamol with codeine and given that I am incredibly weak when it comes to pain relievers two codeine tablets will probably do me fine.

That's pretty cool you're getting it in her handwritting.

So....since I was planning on stretching up to 6g and I lost an 8g, I went ahead and bought a taper and some 6g plugs. I'm just going to say the plug I dropped is a lost cause and move on to bigger and better plugs. Also these.

Edit: Strike that, those are what I'm going to get when I get another job. I will have to go sink fishing.

Edit 2.0: So...my largest wrench is like and 1/8th of an inch too small to get around the nuts on the sink, so it's cheaper for me to order new plugs than get a new wrench. Great.

So, I found and example of the kind of style I was thinking of when imagining my zipper tattoo. It is graffiti on a nearby park's graffiti-wall:

I was bored, so I (kinda badly) photoshopped it onto a photo of myself to see how it would look. (it is here in case people's work is super touchy) I was thinking of something other than a zipper lately, but looking at it I am liking the idea again.

I'm actually going to start some tattoo removal today.

LIFE LESSON, PAY ATTENTION:  When learning how to tattoo, do not use your own forearm as a sketchpad.  You will eventually regret it.

That having been said, after walking around with a few sketchy tattoos amongst a whole bunch of very good ones for a number of years, I've decided to get rid of the sketchy ones so I can make room for more good ones.  Yay.    I'll let you know how it goes.

Hannah, definitely get gears. I think it was you who posted this one artist who did lost of tattoos with really cool line work and you liked his gear tattoos. (I'd post a link, but I lost it with my old lappy and can't remember his name.) That would be really cool to get something spilling out as the zipper opens.

I don't know man, the whole "Cyborg" period that everyone went through with Hannah's back would make it pretty great. I'd say if you were gonna go for a anatomical thing though, go with a T-800 endo-skeleton spine with steel cabling muscle instead.

I am all for bio-mechanical tats.

Guys, I am probably not going to get anything shown under the opening of the zipper, because I really only want a very simple tattoo. That is why I am going with just plain black linework, and a very distinct, stencil-y zipper design. I guess if I want to add stuff to it later I can always do that, but I don't think I will. Plus I think it would look kinda weird having a very stylised, simple zipper design with a complex, shaded thing coming out of it, so I don't know how the juxtaposition of the two styles would work anyway.

Maybe if the gears were stylised too, like this then it might work, but still probably wouldn't do it. (That is the one Linds is remembering; the guy's name is Yann and these photos always make me want a tattoo)

Yes, that guy. I would go all the way to Montreal if I could and have him do something on my back.

I dunno, if you wanted to keep it simple, you can just do an outline. I don't think you should get anything shaded. But I think the zipper by itself would still be pretty rad.
