YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
@people talking about free jazz: Wiki!
And yes, they got it right. Free jazz isn't about completely random individual improv. and such. It didn't entirely do away with structure. Free jazz is just really experimental be-bop when you get down to it. The Bad Plus covers are just massively deconstructed versions of the original songs.
Also, on the subject of The Bad Plus, and someone having mentioned Aphex Twin covers, they played "Flim" last night. That basically was one of the best things ever. Except maybe for the part where they played a segment of "Thrift Store Jewelery" with essentially metal drumming, insane jazz bass, and stride piano. It was CHAOS!
Listening to:
The Bad Plus - Prehensile Dream
*neckst*
Tin Hat Trio - Sand Dog Blues
Skibas_clavicle:
OK GO - The Fix Is In
McTaggart:
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Isobel (Bjork cover)
I've really got to get more into this stuff.
Except the bass is breaking my mouse (it sits right in front of my sub and I can hear bits rattling inside).
La Creme:
JFJO are ace. Demon mad ace!
Listening to myself playing some serious synth!
Kai:
Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower
Personally, so much better than the Hendrix version; he hams it up a tad too much.
