Nightwish fires lead vocalist Tarja Turunen because of nonstop argues within the band. "People who don`t talk with each other for a year do not belong in the same band." said Tuomas Holopainen

Now, I'm not a fan of Nightwish but they're ******.

(If you haven't noticed yet, I hate Nightwish. I was up last night watching my local music channel's rock show, and as soon as a Nightwish video came on, I just said "No." and went to bed.)

Yeah... see, this whole thing, the whole "OMG, we're a metal band and we wanna be rich" thing.

Yeah, doesn't work so well. Nope nope. Nope. Not even if you're a Finnish opera metal band who is decidedly more radio-friendly than just about any other metal band out there. Because, friends, where the money comes from is the United States and the touring, merchandising, and record sales thereof.

And really, any band in it for the money is pretty doomed from the get go anyway.

Everyone knows Lacrimosa did the best Phantom of the Opera Cover.

But Nightwish's version of Walking in the Air was pretty fucking neat. And I'll brutally murder anyone who disagrees.

I'm still a tad sad. I liked Nightwish, heaven help me. I'm not as distraught as, say, when Martin Walkyier announced his retirement from music (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WE LOVE YOU MARTIN) but a slight downturning of the mouth was evident.

Also, why can't Nightwish just hire another not-ready-for-prime-time opera singer diva? That open letter says she never helped write songs or choose the musical direction, so as long as they find someone else with a nice pretty operatic voice they should be golden.

I'll have to agree with Khar about the slight downturn of the mouth.

I didn't really like Once, but I do sort of like Nightwish in general.
Maybe some good might yet come out of it, because the replacement might not be quite as scary looking. And Signum, I respect your elitism but realize I will never attain it. I like indie folk/pop too much!

I think that's completely bullshit. I know no-one who thinks that and I know quite a few fans.

Then again, my friend had a party not long back and he thinks NW are "alright" but he insisted on playing them quite a bit as he knew no-one would complain as they're not really "unpaletable" to any fans of specific genres. So once I was drunk I was like "I know a great melodic hardcore song everyone will like" and put "Killswitch Engage - My Last Serenade" on.

I was so sad this happened. The band sucked, the singer is awesome. Frankly he only reason you;d listen to it is because of the sweet vocals that are now non existant.

I've liked Nightwish ever since I heard Angels Fall First.. then Oceanborn and Wishmaster. Century Child was a release that disappointed me quite a lot and Once, well, made me a bit disinterested even about their future career - but this little incident woke me up again.

I'm really interested to see how the whole Nightwish -brand progresses from now on. It's not like they have anything to lose anymore since they fired their most powerful icon.. I hope Tuomas Holopainen continues to explore the limits of his songwriting skills, recruits a decent substitute for Tarja and keeps going on the limelight.

There are at least several underground metal bands with vocalists as good as or better than Tarja.I can't really blame Tuomas for getting tired of people blaming their success on Tarja and not him, as he's responsible for everything the band has ever done musically.

He's also probably at least partly responsible for making the bands entire image be based on her. She was bashed incessantly as a marketing tool in an exceptionally LOOK BOOBEHS way. Take for example, the 1997-2001 box set:

Tarja was Nightwish, I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but Tuomas can't sing worth crap, no matter how hard he tried.

I doubt I'll follow Nightwish anymore, however I do intend to continue following Tarja because I absolutely adore her voice, operatic voices are awesome.

Because yes, singing is the only important part of metal. WTF!?! And instead of following her career, why not follow art singers who are far better at the whole operatic voice thing than she is?

Come on, Tarja was, at the end of the day, a generic gothy-looking opera chick. She didn't actually write any of the music herself. All they need is another generic gothy-looking opera chick and they'll be fine. It's the Nightwish music that I like, not (especially) her voice. Although I wish Tuomas would cut down on the angsty lyrics.
