Banned XBox 360 Ad.

<< < (5/5)

Sideways:
That was hilarious!

Two things:

1.  I don't see what it has to do with the XBox, or Video Gaming as a whole...

2.  I can understand why people wanted it off the air.  Violence and all that.  I don't think it should have been banned, but I can see why the fundamentalists/conservatives would've had a cry about it.

Garcin:
This commercial was apparently shown at the Microsoft 360 launch, and was supposedly intended to be broadcast at some point in the future.  The only people who know whether it will ever be broadcast is the Microsoft PR department.  It was not "banned" by government "censors" since it was never broadcast, and American television censors (ie. the FCC) do not get to review commercials before they are broadcast.  It is possible that one of the major networks refused to play the commercial, but this is unlikely because usually such rejections are considered newsworthy in the entertainment press, and there has been no report of any such rejection.

All of that being said, it would be a really terrible idea for Microsoft to release this ad on network television.  I'm fairly certain that the last thing the automatic weapon toting National guardsmen want to see in Grand Central station is a bunch of asshat teenagers imitating this commercial during rush hour.  True -- this may happen anyway given the broad replaying that this commercial is getting over the web.  But the cool thing about internet meme/viral marketing is that as it stands, if something bad happens because of this commercial, Microsoft can always  say that it was never intended for general distribution.  If it were broadcast -- well there goes the plausible deniability.

And, yes, I think it's pretty cool too.

Spike:
Then I stand firmly corrected as far as the banned or not banned status of this commercial goes.  Hate to misinform people, even about the most menial things.

Sideways:
I think it's awesome that teenagers will mimic this commercial if it comes out.

I think it's also awesome that teenagers act dangerous/stupid/insane/homicidal and then blame video games.

I think it's - again - awesome that government officials (Senators, Congresspersons, MPs, etc) buy into it, and blame the games/game-commercials.

And lastly, I think it's truly awesome that there is no proof of violence amongst youth increasing - per capita - with the advance of technology in video games, and yet we face an 'epidemic' according to some people.

Apparantly people were never violent until this past century, when movies, music and games made them that way.  The crusades, conquistadors, civil wars, slavery... none of these things actually happened.  We've only become evil because of technology, people!
