Recommend, for me, a good PC RTS...
Bunnyman:
Well, if we're talking Oldschool too...
The first C&C:Red Alert. So amazingly awesome. Was so much more viscerally satisfying than Blizzard games...I mean, hordes of infantry getting cut down by machinegun fire, MiG strikes on tank columns, and the odd nuclear explosion or teleporting ore truck for good measure. Good times.
Also, it was one of those games where you could start cackling maniacally on several occasions. Most notably parking a couple of heavy cruisers outside an enemy base and raining heavy gunfire upon it until it transmutes into a smoldering heap of wreckage. Aah, memories.
Also, if you like a bit of realism/simulation, I recommend the Close Combat series. I'm particularly fond of CC3, which takes place on the Eastern Front. Real-time, but plays like a wargame. Quite sensational, and still has no lack of 'maniacal cackling' moments, many involving either flamethrowers or StuGs. Blowing the snot out of a particularly pesky machinegun nest with steely determination and a 75mm Close Support Howitzer is eminently satisfying.
And, of course, we can't forget Total Annihilation.
Switchblade:
OOH! the Total Annihilation Spring project
Basically, this is an open source project taking original TA, and converting it to full 3D, without changing the game dynamic at all. TRES cool thus far. if you know TA, you'll be able to play TA Spring instantly, basically.
Thus far, the terrain's a lot more detailed than the units (they basically just used the 3D models from the original TA) but it's still a great way to play the game.
Oli:
I quite like the battle realms games...
They are fairly unique
And the way to make a certain unit is by taking a peasant then training him at one place, then at another and so on till you get the combonation of teh UBER units :-)
Also if you are really into RTS you might wanna give "Cultures" a shot.
Basically you run viking settlements and have to make everything.
For example:
If you wanna make a spearman (the easiest soldier in the game to make)
You have to:
Get a guy chopping wood to get logs.
Once he's chopped wood for a wee while he becomes good enough at it to become a joiner (Put somone else on the chopping wood duty so there are still logs coming in for him to work with)
Build him a joiners workshop
Once he is good enough at joining stuff he can become a spear maker
Have him build spears
While guy 1 is busy chopping/joining/spear making have another guy hunting. (hunting gets food, but more importantly for this leather)
Once he's hunted for long enough he can become a tanner (I think, it's been awhile since I played)
Tanners make leather armour for the spearmen
Once you have a few sets of spear and armour built
send them to a barracks (which you've built)
Send some guy into the barracks an make him a soldier
Making bowmen and swordsmen is harder.
Fighting in that game is solid...I never completed it...
it's still quite fun and should get easier once you get into it...but you really do have to run EVERYTHING!
