This is not an ideal solution but I deal with avi's by opening them up in quicktime and then exporting to some other file format.

nihilist:
An AVI is just a wrapper around a different format.  Could be MP4, could be XviD, could be 3vix.  Gotta find out.  Grab GSpot to figure out what it really is.
