Yeah, I wouldn't really look up bad bands labels.
  I don't even know the labels of most of the bands I like.

Yes, but part of their back-catalogue, which is better than their current material, is on Peaceville. Their best stuff is actually probably on Music For Nations. Speaking of Music For Nations, I have no idea what their current stable is, but they do manage some rather nice back catalogues.

i think drag city is a pretty consistently great label.  they've got smog, silver jews, papa m, will oldham, six organs, on and on.
as far as other labels i dig: matador, rough trade, and anticon are all dope.  
and rhino is putting together some pretty great reissue packages, like all the elvis costello and talking heads stuff.
