top 20 records of 2005
Praeserpium Machinarum:
On that list I have heard Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens. If I were to rank them(all these lists are pointless if you ask me but) then it's Picaresque first and Illinoise second. Why? Because Illinoise was too long, not a bad track per sé but a couple of interludes and weaker songs that weren't strictly necessary. It seems this is a curse of some bands, they are too talented and enthusiastic for their own good. They want to share so much that it ends up being too much. Other examples of this is Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf, Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk and others. Don't get me wrong, Illinoise is a good and engaging record but it is also an exhausting listen in my opinion.

Songs for the Deaf was too long? It wasn't even sixty minutes though.
Tago Mago:
Is it really such a great year when you have such serious reservations about your number one choice?

In my opinion - yes. I admit it is a sprawling near-masterpiece, but it could have been even better if they left out some of the weaker cuts. And of course let A Song for the Deaf be the ending song.
