The Ask Jeph thread
celticgeek:
I get that "long load and white page" sometimes, although I would say no more that 2-3 % of the time. I get it when clicking to get into a thread, or sometimes into a topic. I click "Go Back One Page", and get back to whatever I was coming from, and do it over.
I also occasionally get the "xxx.php" page, and it asks if I want to look at it with a text editor. I have looked at it, but didn't see anything helpful, so now I just click "Cancel", and it goes away.
I don't consider either of these to be a large problem, just a minor annoyance.
pwhodges:
I get the blank page occasionally, the .php thing never; but most often the site just stops responding for a couple of minutes - I see this once or twice a day, sometimes more. This is not a thing to do with my home connection, for instance, as I get the same at work on my university connection through Janet. Usually the comic still loads (making me suspect the forum software), but just sometimes both become unresponsive.

Hey Jeph
Can we hook up and jam some time? I don't live anywhere near you, but I might be there on Sunday. Or not. Someday, yes.

a) fist bump.
b) high five.
c) exploding high five.
d) shake hands in a solemn manner and never speak of it again.

Also, do you spell it hoodie or hoody?

No, and it's spelled hoodie.
--- Quote from: PrickOfDestiny on 17 Apr 2009, 09:12 ---Sorry if the question's been asked before, but I don't think this forum has a "search this thread for..." button, and the thread is already 30+ pages long.
Here's my question: as the creator of a popular webcomic, what advice would you give to someone who's about to launch a minor one? (as regards attracting a larger readership, for example, or any other useful advice you could think of)

Expect to fail, work your ass off, expect to fail, work your ass off. Repeat ad infinitum.
--- Quote from: SilentJ on 17 Apr 2009, 10:03 ---Jeph, why do guitar players seem to hate multi-effect pedals so much?
Not only am I on a somewhat tight budget, so I can't buy a whole buncha pedals, but I think they're really handy and fun pieces of equipment to use, so I bought myself a Boss ME-50 the other day and I'm just catching shit left and right for it.

Part of it is the usual guitar snob assholery, to be sure, by MY main problem with them is durability. If you've got six different pedals and one breaks, you're only out that one pedal. If you're using a multi-effect pedal and it breaks, you're shit outta luck. And ALL pedals break eventually no matter how rugged they are.
--- Quote from: SirJuggles on 17 Apr 2009, 13:22 ---Actually that makes me think of an actual question, though I'm not sure you are the one to pose it to. Seeing as we have no real dedicated meta-thread around here, where should we direct queries about technical concerns of the forums? The only persistent thing I've noticed is occasionally when clicking into any given thread there seems to be about a 15% chance that all I'll get is a long load followed by a white screen. Sometimes it clears up with 2 or 3 refreshes, sometimes it stays that way for a few hours. I haven't heard anyone else mention anything, so maybe it's just me?

To be frank, and nothing personal, but you're all extremely lucky these forums are still even HERE, much less mostly functional.
Also that problem sounds like it's just you. I've never had it.
