The Dalai lama can reincarnate, and he's on his 14th continue, I think. So that should give him an advantage of lots of experience points.

The Dalai Lama reincarnates. He will be back, whether he wins this round or not. The pope will be in heaven... or somewhere. But he won't be here.

That would only be true if no pope gets elected after the last one. Granted, not the same soul, but the idea of a pope doesn't stop existing at all.
